Musicload was an online music service launched in October 2003 and operated by Dixero Media since the end of June 2014 . Deutsche Telekom was previously responsible.

history

The available Musicload titles were initially exclusively in WMA format is available that with DRM has been provided to the transfer of purchased titles on file shares and file sharing to prevent.

Before the start of Musicload, Deutsche Telekom worked closely with Universal Music to launch the popfile.de payment service, which went online in August 2002. Even then, the music files were provided with a watermark for DRM purposes.

Since December 2006, music has increasingly been offered in the DRM-free MP3 format with a quality of up to 320 kbps ( VBR ).

From 2007 Musicload also offered music videos in WMV format with DRM encryption, making it the first provider of downloadable music videos in Germany. However, the quality was often reduced due to the use of interpolation .

Since 2011, the catalog has been successively expanded so that selected albums and tracks are offered in the uncompressed WAV format in addition to the popular MP3 format.

On April 2, 2014, Deutsche Telekom announced that its portals Musicload and Gamesload would be discontinued on May 28, 2014. The platform was not profitable in the long run because of the dominance of iTunes and Amazon on the one hand and the increasing popularity of music streaming on the other.

technology

Since Musicload decided against DRM, the offer was available in MP3 format, which could be played on all popular music players, including Apple's iPod, all PCs, most music cell phones and even car or web radios. Videos were still offered in the DRM-protected WMV format, which can only be played in Windows Media Player from version 10 (sometimes also 11).

The preview function could still only be used if Windows Media Player was installed, and the Musicload Nonstop flat rate offer was also intended for this player.

The purchase of music at www.musicload.de was limited to IP addresses from Germany. With www.musicload.at and www.musicload.ch there have been almost identical portals in Austria and Switzerland since June 2008. These were discontinued on May 21, 2014.

Some titles were provided with a digital watermark, which was located in the audible listening area. This qualitative restriction could also be proven with the WAVE files offered as "audio format for the highest demands" .

Payment Methods

Musicload not only accepted the most common online credit cards ( Visa , Mastercard or American Express ) as means of payment , but also the micro- payment systems PayPal and instant transfer .
