Life

Kalkbrenner was born in 1977 in Leipzig as the son of journalists Jörn and Carla Kalkbrenner , but grew up in Berlin-Lichtenberg . His grandfather was the painter and communist Fritz Eisel .

After training in music theory and playing the trumpet, Kalkbrenner turned to dance in the early 1990s , influenced by the publications of the Berliners Moritz von Oswald and Mark Ernestus ( Basic Channel ) . Together with his flatmate at the time, Sascha Funke , he began DJing in the city's youth clubs in 1992. After leaving the Georg-Christoph-Lichtenberg-Oberschule without a degree in 1996, he worked as an editor for various television productions.

In 1999 he released his first EP Largesse under the pseudonym Paul dB + , followed by the Friedrichshain EP on Ellen Allien's label BPitch Control .

His first album Superimpose was released in 2001. He achieved greater fame in the dance scene with his third album Self , released in 2004 , on which Kalkbrenner used downbeat and trance elements. The album received mostly good to very good reviews.

In 2008, Kalkbrenner took on the leading role as Berlin DJ Ickarus in Hannes Stöhr's film Berlin Calling , for which he also produced the soundtrack . He had previously contributed to the soundtrack for Stöhr's One Day In Europe tracks. He achieved his final breakthrough in 2009 with the single Sky and Sand , which was extracted from the Berlin Calling soundtrack and which was created together with his brother Fritz Kalkbrenner . More than three years after its release, the single reached number 29 in the singles charts in Germany and also achieved international chart placements. On May 4, 2012, Paul Kalkbrenner set a record with the single Sky and Sand , as it was represented in the German Top 100 for a total of 107 weeks and thus the previous record holder Ein Stern by DJ Ötzi and Last Christmas by Wham! referred to the following places. No other single since 1977 had a chart placement of more than 107 weeks. In total, the single stayed there for 129 weeks. The soundtrack went platinum in 2012 for over 200,000 copies sold.

In the winter of 2010/2011, Kalkbrenner performed without a fee as part of a troop visit for Bundeswehr soldiers in three field camps in Afghanistan, which in some cases earned the artist harsh criticism, but was defended as a "significant event" by colleagues such as Hans Nieswandt . Kalkbrenner rejects the Bundeswehr mission in Afghanistan.

In 2010, the musician separated from BPitch Control and founded his own label Paul Kalkbrenner Musik . Kalkbrenner's album Icke Wieder was released on June 3, 2011. It barely missed the top of the German album charts.

On August 3, 2012, Kalkbrenner released his new single Das Gezabel on Paul Kalkbrenner Musik. The track is also featured on the album Guten Tag , which was released on November 30, 2012. On May 30, 2014, the remix album x was released , including remixes by Pan-Pot and Joris Voorn .

Kalkbrenner has been married to the Romanian DJ Simina Grigoriu since August 25, 2012 . They married in secret at Schloss Herzfelde in Uckermark. Their daughter Isabella Amelie was born on April 20, 2015.

On November 9, 2014, Paul Kalkbrenner was part of the program at the “25 Years Fall of the Wall” festival at the Brandenburg Gate , the official celebrations for this anniversary.

In 2015 Paul Kalkbrenner announced the collaboration with the major label Sony Music . He was the first artist to have access to the Sony Music archive. For his tracks he was allowed to use the original vocals of Jefferson Airplane's hit “White Rabbit”, Luther Vandross classic “Never Too Much” or D-Trains “You Are The One For Me”. On August 7th, 2015 his seventh studio album "7" was released. It went from zero to number 1 in Germany, Austria and Switzerland, and the album was also successful internationally.

In July 2016, Kalkbrenner published the first mixtape for Back To The Future , a personal project in which he remixed the electronic songs of his youth and put them online for free. The musical chronology of his youth comprised a total of three mixtapes. The mixtapes have been downloaded over 1.5 million times. The press reacted accordingly, the American Rolling Stone described it as “viral, techno history lesson” and the US Billboard magazine described Back To The Future as “work of historical excavation”. In 2017 Kalkbrenner announced a back-to-the-future tour. For the first time since 1998 he will not play his own songs and will also appear in halls that are relatively small for him. The tour goes through Europe and is already sold out.
