The SonneMondSterne Festival (SMS for short) is one of the largest open-air festivals for electronic dance music in Europe , with representatives of rock and pop appearing here and there . The festival takes place annually on the second weekend in August in Thuringia at the Bleilochtalsperre near Saalburg-Ebersdorf .
history
The first SonneMondSterne Festival took place in 1997 on two stages with 2,500 visitors. In 2011, around 35,000 people attended the three-day event. Since 2007 every SonneMondSterne festival has been named with an X as an addition, which represents the Roman number ten. The 2007 festival is therefore named SMS.XI , which stands for the eleventh event. The 20th anniversary in 2016 was sold out in February of that year, earlier than ever in the history of the festival.
Related events
As an offshoot, there was the winter camp in 2001 and 2002 , which was a series of events in February to bridge the time until the next SonneMondSterne festival. Due to the large number of visitors, the winter camp moved to the old military airfield in Allstedt in April 2003 and was henceforth called SonneMondSterne presents Camp Music . The last Camp Music took place in 2004 .
Construction of the festival site
The structure has remained almost unchanged since 2004. Apart from special circumstances and occasions, the site consists of:
- Main stage
- large open-air stage
- Main tent (Maincircus)
- Big top the size and shape of a hall
- second stage (2nd stage)
- second open-air stage
- 4 circus tents (Clubtent)
- Circus tents in which scene clubs and labels present themselves
- Party boat (Freshboat)
- the passenger ship "MS Gera" specially decorated for the SonneMondSterne-Festival
- Catering
- Bars, restaurants (in the form of beer tents) and various food stands
- Marketplace
- for merchandising / sales stands
- sports ground
- for afternoon games, e.g. B. Football, volleyball ( "Dry Cup Area" )
Outside the festival area there are several hectares of camping grounds, washing and showering areas, as well as shopping and catering facilities. The campsite is divided into “loud” and “quiet”. While music can be made around the clock on the "loud" part, this should be avoided if possible at night on the "quiet" part.
