Turntablerocker are a German DJ and club music producer duo, consisting of Michael “Michi” Beck from the rap band Die Fantastischen Vier and Thomas “Thomilla” Burchia . As one of the first DJs and producers, you established hip-hop as party music in German club culture.

Band history

The musicians from Stuttgart first met in 1994 in a record store where Thomilla worked. At that time, “Die Fantastischen Vier” had long been a fixture in German hip-hop. Thomilla has already made a name for himself as a producer for German spoken vocal artists and as a DJ for the Stuttgart band “Die Krähen”. It was not uncommon for Michi Beck to play new songs when buying Thomilla and get his opinion. Through frequent encounters in the shop and the artistic exchange of ideas, the two soon noticed that they had similar musical preferences. At Thomilla's invitation, Michi Beck soon joined the DJ team at “Red Dog”, Stuttgart, where the two played on several Wednesday evenings together until the club closed in 1997. This gave the impetus for further cooperation.

It was only through the joint studio work in 1996 and 1997 that the decision was made to perform together as a DJ team in the future. During this time "Hausmarke - Weltweit" was created, Michi Beck's solo album, which was produced by Thomilla. One of the singles released at the time, “Turntablerocker - Move your bottom”, finally provided the idea for the name of the DJ duo. In 1998 a live tour and numerous DJ gigs followed under the name "Turntablerocker". The two musicians decided to abandon the conventional division into DJ and front man, which was probably due to the fact that Michi Beck did not enjoy rapping and entertaining without his three colleagues from the Fantas. From now on they began to compose and produce tracks together that were supposed to get by without vocal performance and, above all, without well-known guests. The duo set a particular ambition in the task of creating a "club-like groove" that was intent on up tempo and combined influences of East Coast Hip Hop, Soul and R&B . With this sound concept, which they called "Swingbeat" and later "Boogie", they tried to develop their own concept of dance music . They contrasted their swinging sound with the club music of the 1990s, which was dominated by house and techno.

Album history

The shared experiences as producers, musicians and DJs processed "Turntablerocker" on the 2001 album Classic . Most of the tracks on the LP are instrumental and influenced by funk , disco , house and hip-hop. Singing and rap are not in the foreground. The two musicians described their record as a hip-hop-oriented boogie between hip-hop and house . Some critics drew stylistic parallels to dance floor hits from the late eighties or to Fatboy Slim . The album went from 0 to number 17 in the German Top 100 album charts and stayed there for a total of eight weeks. Not least because of its success in German-speaking countries and because of the live performances and DJ shows, "Classic" soon found worldwide approval and was released in Japan , Canada , Mexico , Europe and Australia . The album was presented on a Germany-wide tour. She accompanied a band specially put together for the occasion.

In 2002 the successor Smile appeared . In contrast to "Classic", the duo did without a production based on samples , and increasingly relied on diverse arrangements with variable use of vocals and comprehensible song structure. Compared to the debut album, most of the tracks were much more tempo-friendly, had a touch of electronics and made the record extremely party-compatible overall.

The imaginative and humorous music videos of the "Turntablerocker", which were shot for the singles "No Melody", "A Little Funk", "Time For Music" and "Love Supreme" by Zoran Bihać , were also very well known .

In the following years more singles emerged. In addition to regular DJ appearances, the two primarily concentrated on remixes for other artists such as B. Die Fantastischen Vier , Bob Sinclar , Gwen Stefani and Tiefschwarz .

For the 2010 film Jerry Cotton , the duo provided the remix of the title track "Run Baby Run", which was sung by Oceana .

In December 2011, the Turntablerocker announced on their homepage that ten years after their last album “Smile” was released in March 2012, they would release their third album “Einszwei” and thus go on a club tour in the same year. On February 10th, the first single "Von Vorn" hit stores. The second single "Alles auf die 303" was released on March 16, 2012.

style

While “turntable rockers” preferred to play hip-hop-heavy sets at the beginning of their joint career, today they cannot be assigned to any particular genre. Their DJ sets are characterized by an unconventional mix of electro , house, breakbeats , hip-hop, funk and soul. You call it Electronic Wildstyle .
