Young MC (* May 10, 1967 in London , England as Marvin Young ) is a rapper of the styles pop-rap and west coast hip-hop .

biography

Marvin Young grew up in the middle class and graduated from the University of Southern California with a degree in economics . There he met Mike Ross and Matt Dike , who had just founded the Delicious Vinyl label . Young joined this and released the song I Let 'Em Know under the stage name Young MC .

In 1989 he worked with Tone Lōc on his piece of music Wild Thing . It became the first single by a black-skinned rapper in the United States to rank among the top 10 positions on the Billboard Hot 100 . Young MC was also involved in their successor, Funky Cold Medina . This was also a great success with 3rd place on the Billboard Hot 100.

Later that year he worked as a solo artist on his debut single Bust a Move , a casual song about the successes and failures of flirting . Once again he was able to push himself into the top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100 and received a platinum record from the RIAA . and in 1990 the Grammy Award for Best Rap Performance . It also helped his first album, Stone Cold Rhymin ' , which also went platinum by the RIAA, reach # 9 on the Billboard 200 . The second single from this album, Principal's Office , also made it into the Billboard Hot 100, but with 33rd place it was not nearly as successful as Bust a Move . But in the United Kingdom , his country of birth, it was the most successful single of his career at number 54.

After his success, Young MC split up in a dispute with his label Delicious Vinyl and accused them of interfering with his work. Delicious Vinyl, in turn, sued Young MC for breach of contract. Finally, an out-of-court settlement was reached and Young MC signed with Capitol Records , where he released his second album, Brainstorm . His style changed - he no longer rapped on simple everyday topics, but wanted to convey messages like calls for personal responsibility. The album received a gold record, but could not build on the success of its debut.

This development intensified until 1993, especially with the advent of harder hip-hops like gangsta rap and hardcore rap , which was more popular with listeners. This made Young MC's third album, What's the Flavor? , a flop.

This required a longer creative break, until he released the self-deprecating album Return of the 1 Hit Wonder in 1997 (in German: Return of the One-Hit-Wonder ). However, there was still no success. Nevertheless, further albums followed at irregular intervals until 2009, all of which were released independently and did not achieve any commercial significance.

In 2009, Young also appeared in the Oscar- nominated film Up in the Air .
