The Grammy Award for Best Rap Performance , in German "Grammy Award for the best rap performance", is a music prize that was first awarded in 1989 and 1990 and since 2012 at the annual Grammy Awards . Artists are honored for outstanding songs that are rapped on, i.e. mainly songs from the genre of hip-hop music.

Background and story

The Grammy Awards (actually Grammophone Awards), which have been presented since 1958, are presented annually in numerous categories by the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (NARAS) in the United States of America for artistic achievement, technical competence and excellent overall performance regardless of the album - Honor sales or chart position.

The Grammy Award for Best Rap Performance was introduced to honor rap artists at the 31st awards in 1989, as rap music had become popular in the 1980s.

According to the category description, the award is given to artists for rap songs that were newly recorded or became known during the award period. From 1991 to 2011, the category was divided into the awards for Grammy Award for Best Rap Solo Performance and Grammy Award for Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group . However, both categories were merged again in 2012 to reduce the number of prizes. The award is given according to the current regulations for performances (singles / songs) by individual artists as well as duos and music groups from the field of hip-hop music.
