Jay Rock (born March 31, 1985 in Los Angeles ; actually Johnny Reed McKinzie Jr. ) is an American rapper .

biography

Jay Rock grew up in the Watts neighborhood of Los Angeles . Prison experiences made him rap. He released his first mixtapes via the indie label Top Dawg and finally came to a major label contract with Warner . When he first released All My Life (In the Ghetto) , Lil Wayne and Will.i.am helped him in 2008 . More mix tapes followed. He was accepted into the Freshman Class 2010 by XXL magazine . But success did not materialize and at the end of the year the contract was terminated again.

In 2011 he released his first album Follow Me Home on Top Dawg Entertainment . With that he achieved his breakthrough, he reached number 83 on the US album charts and number 10 on the rap charts. He also formed the Black Hippy crew with Kendrick Lamar , Schoolboy Q and Ab-Soul . With Lamar he recorded his second single Hood Gone Love It and in return was featured on his successful album Good Kid, MAAD City in the song Money Trees , which made it to number 35 on the R&B charts.

It was not until 2015 that Jay Rock finished another album. It was named after the zip code of its hometown Watts 90059 . In addition to Lamar, SZA and Busta Rhymes were among the guests and helped bring the album to number 1 on the rap charts. It reached number 16 in the official charts.

A serious motorcycle accident then put him out of action for some time, and he did not return until 2018. He participated in the all-star soundtrack for Lamar's Black Panther earlier this year and together with him, Future and James Blake he had the hit King's Dead , which went triple platinum and made him known internationally. A few months later he had his third album of his own, Redemption . With 13th place, he achieved his best placement on the Billboard 200 to date.
