The soundtrack for the film Black Panther was put together by Kendrick Lamar , who also produced it together with Anthony Tiffith , as Marvel Studios and TDE Entertainment announced in early January 2018.

History of origin

Kendrick Lamar provided the soundtrack to the film Black Panther together

While the music for the film Black Panther was composed by Ludwig Göransson , Kendrick Lamar ultimately put together the soundtrack for the film, in the film itself Lamar's music is only used in the background. On Black Panther: The Album also found songs by the hip-hop artist The Weeknd , Future , Schoolboy Q , Vince Staples , Anderson .Paak and Travis Scott , but also lesser-known South African musicians such as the Johannesburg old rapper Yugen Blakrok, Seasons together with the artist Sjavi, who sings his verses completely in Zulu , and the South African diva and Gqom-Queen Babes Wodumu and, ultimately, a piano piece by James Blake . Also includes Black Panther: The album also the song All the Stars . Ryan Coogler , the film's director, revealed that Lamar originally only wanted to contribute a few songs to the soundtrack. When he saw the film, the rapper decided to create the entire soundtrack.

Coogler said Lamar was perfect for film music because "its content reflects exactly the issues we are addressing in the film." Coogler and lead actor Chadwick Boseman had mentioned several times that they were big fans of Lamar. He was inspired by the Marvel comic when designing Black Panther: The Album . Regarding the use of modern music, co- record producer Sounwave said it made a very good move: “I think it's only right. The film doesn't set in 1910 or the 1960s when Black Panther first came out. It is located in today. "

Martin Böttcher from Deutschlandfunk Kultur notes that Kendrick Lamar is a prominent voice against the oppression of blacks in the USA: "The multiple Grammy winner repeatedly drew attention to social grievances in his texts and criticized the widespread racism in US society."

In addition to the album, there is also a classic film soundtrack. This was released on February 16, 2018 by Marvel Music and Hollywood Records and contains 28 pieces of music.

reception

In an interview with Martin Böttcher from Deutschlandfunk Kultur, music journalist Dennis Pohl said : “In this case, for once, you have shown foresight in dealing with black culture. One can only congratulate Marvel for that. ”The album is more political than the film, which is why Pohl also believes that the soundtrack could ultimately have a greater impact on pop culture than the film itself, and without the context of the film, the music even works Better, because Lamar has simply recorded something like the most contemporary piece of music that can be made in 2018: "Stylistically diverse and excellently produced, the album also impresses musically." Deutschlandfunk Kultur also states that the album is in particular an inventory of the black zeitgeist and at the same time far more than just a background for the cinema pictures: "Lamar creates an independent work with a political message."

GQ's Kathleen Johnston explains that Black Panther: The Album isn't what you'd expect from a soundtrack for a Disney-produced blockbuster, but that's what makes it so brilliant. Another synergy between the film and the soundtrack, according to Johnston, is that Lamar brings in such a diversity of African voices that reflect the film's message of true diversity, and along with its on-screen counterpart, the album becomes a historic landmark of diversification into that History of pop culture go down.

Natalie Maher of the music magazine Billboard thinks that Lamar is an effective fusion of the sounds of the west coast with those of South Africa, with almost half of the two being represented. Maher particularly highlights lines of text from the song Opps by Vince Staples and Yugen Blakrok , the last verse in which a rap sung with a strong accent reads: "Roar like a lioness, punch like a cyborg."

About the opening song Black Panther , Markus Schneider of the Berliner Zeitung says that Lamar takes the position of the film hero in the title track with the greatest of naturalness and his well-known urgent and urgent flow and robs the Afro-American community through all virulent topics. With the battle cry "King of my city, king of my country, king of my homeland", he dances over the electronic-tribalistic drums: "Black Panther, King Kendrick, all hail the King". On the other hand, he interprets his curator role as a team player, Schneider continues.
