Vincent Jamal Staples (* 2. July 1993 in Bellflower , California ) is an American rap - and hip-hop - musicians from Long Beach , which at the labels Def Jam Recordings , Blacksmith Records and Artium Recordings under contract. He is a member of the hip-hop group Cutthroat Boyz , alongside Californian rappers Joey Fatts and A $ ton Matthews.

life and career

Childhood and youth

Vincent Staples grew up as the youngest of four children in Long Beach in the district Ramona Park , but spent much of his childhood with his grandparents in Compton , where he remained until the high school attended different schools. He has two older sisters and an older brother, as well as an older half-sister on his mother's side and a younger half-brother on his father's side. His mother worked a lot to support the family, and his father was repeatedly detained for drug offenses, among other things. The parents eventually separated at Vincent's elementary school age. Vince Staples portrayed his childhood relationship with his father in the song and accompanying music video "Nate," which he released in March 2013. Vincent's grandfather Andrew Hutchins, with whom he had a very good relationship, died at the end of 2005, which, according to Vince himself, was a decisive experience. In 2014 the younger of his sisters died. Vincent's four-year-old half-brother has been in custody since 2012 on charges of attempted murder.

Vince Staples' youth were marked by gang clashes in Ramona Park . Like numerous friends and relatives, he was an active member of the local Crip Gang Naughty Nasty Gangster Crips (2NGC). After graduating from high school and finishing school at the personality development Optimal Christian Academy , Staples wanted to drop out of school. He first attended Mayfair High School in Lakewood , but quickly got into trouble there. However, Vincent's charges of aggravated assault, armed robbery, threatening a witness and more resulting from an incident in 2006 were dropped after the case was resolved three years later. After the incident, his mother sent him to live with his sister in Atlanta for several months . After his return he attended various high schools in La Palma , Long Beach , Bellflower and Anaheim , but saw himself confronted with problems again and again due to his constant truancy and frequent fights and finally dropped out in 2009. On November 29, 2008, Staples' close friend Jabari Benton was shot dead.

During this time, Vince Staples also had to experience the loss of other friends and relatives who were murdered or had to answer to court and sometimes served life sentences .

Music style, lyric content and reflection

Vince Staples repeatedly stated in interviews that he had nothing to do with gang-related crime and that he had come to an end with his violent past. But he is still loyal to his friends, his hometown and his gang culture origin and would not regret anything.

“I was never a troublemaker, but I'm loyal to where I come from. A lot of people don't understand that it's more of, 'I live over here I have to deal with this. These are the only niggas that care about me so of course I'm going to be a part of this shit. ' It isn't about being cool or wearing colors or nothing, it's about where you live at and having respect for that neighborhood. "

- Vince Staples 2015

“I've never caused big problems, but I'm loyal to my origins and home. Many people don't understand that there is more of the idea that I live here and that I have to deal with it. These are the only people who care about me, so of course I'm part of it. Has. It's not about being cool or wearing colors or anything, it's about where you live and that you respect your district. "

Vince Staples also emphasizes the difference between the hip-hop culture drawn and glorified by the media and so-called gangsta rap and the real gang culture . His music and rap lyrics are simply the result of his own life experiences, which were largely determined by gang culture and aroused frustration and doubt. Staples therefore does not list well-known greats in the music and rap industry as inspiration for his music, but rather life. He wants to give a voice to the people who share his or similar experiences every day and create awareness and sensitivity for the topic.

“On the news you can hear about terrorism all day, you can hear about wars, you can hear about how many people are dying in other places and you'll understand it, but you never really get it until a 9/11 happens or until you see someone from ISIS cutting someone's head off. This music is that to me. This is watching someone get their head cut off. "

- Vince Staples, 2015

“You can hear about terrorism on the news every day, you can hear about wars, you can hear how many people died elsewhere and you will understand. But you will never really get it until something like 9/11 happens, or until you see someone's head cut off by ISIS. This music is that for me. It's watching someone have their head cut off. "

Vince is therefore often praised by critics for his poetic clarity, for the sober, sometimes nihilistic reflection of reality, for the cool, hard honesty of his texts and the reflection of this very mood in his music, as well as for his authenticity.

"I don't really care to be a rapper - I'd rather just be myself."

- Vince Staples, 2015

"I don't really care about being a rapper - I'd rather be just myself."

Music career

Beginning of the musical career

The stay in Atlanta enabled Vince to take a distant perspective on his own environment for the first time and was - according to his own account - the starting point of an initial interest in music. After returning to Long Beach , Vince tried to avoid gang-related issues and made friends with new people in his neighborhood, including a boy by the name of Lavi $ h. It was through Lavi $ h that Staples met music producer Michael Uzowuru and the members of hip-hop group Odd Future Syd Tha Kyd , Mike G, Matt Martians and Earl Sweatshirt in 2009 , with whom Vince developed close friends. After dropping out of school and being thrown out of his mother's house, Vince lived in Syd Tha Kyd's house and spent most of his time in their music studio , which established itself as a meeting place for Odd Future and numerous other young artists from Long Beach and Los Angeles . The new friendships and contacts led to their first involvement in their debut projects. Staples also appeared as a guest musician on Earl Sweatshirt's debut mixtape Earl, and after its mysterious disappearance - Earl Sweatshirt had been sent by his mother to the Coral Reef Academy in Samoa - enjoyed greater attention for the first time. Rather out of boredom, because of the lack of prospects, as well as the numerous new contacts, Vince finally began to pursue his own rap career.

In December 2011 Vince released his debut mixtape Shyne Coldchain Vol. 1 on the Internet . His second mixtape, Winter In Prague , which was produced by Michael Uzowuru, followed in October 2012 .

2013: Collaboration with Mac Miller and Def Jam Recordings

At the end of 2012, Staples met Mac Miller through Earl Sweatshirt, who, under the alias Larry Fisherman, produced the mixtape Stolen Youth with him , in which Ab-Soul , Schoolboy Q , Da $ h, Hardo and Joey Fatts also took part as guest musicians. After the release of the mixtape, Vince Staples accompanied Mac Miller on his The Space Migration Tour and appeared several times as a guest musician on the debut studio album Doris von Earl Sweatshirt. Then Staples was taken into custody by the music label Def Jam Recordings and began to focus on music in his life apart from Ramona Park .

2014: Shyne Coldchain Vol. 2 and EP debut Hell Can Wait

On March 13th, 2014 Vince Staples released his fourth mixtape Shyne Coldchain Vol. 2 . When creating the mixtape, with which Staples first gained greater attention as a solo artist, he was supported by producers No ID , Evidence , DJ Babu , Childish Major and Scoop DeVille, as well as by Jhené Aiko and James Fauntleroy, who participated as guest musicians , supported.

In October 2014, Vince Staples released his first EP and major label debut Hell Can Wait . The singles “Blue Suede” and “Hands Up” were released in advance with the accompanying music video.

The successes in 2014, which had made Staples known mainly within the USA , led to the clothing of his first film role. At the end of 2014, a cameo for Vince Staples in the California crime comedy Dope by director Rick Famuyiwa was shot. The film, which starred Shameik Moore, Tony Revolori , Kiersey Clemons , Zoë Kravitz , A $ AP Rocky and Chanel Iman , debuted at the 2015 Sundance Film Festival .

2015: Summertime '06

Vince Staples in October 2015.

On June 30, 2015, Def Jam Recordings and ARTium Recordings released Staple's debut studio double album entitled Summertime '06 , which made Vince's international breakthrough. The Berlin - Munich music magazine Juice named Summertime '06 the third best album of 2015 in the category of international albums . In Spex magazine from Berlin, Staples' album landed in fifth place on the year's best list. Not only the minimalist production, which was directed by No ID, DJ Dahi and Clams Casino, but also Staples' poetry, the autobiographical orientation of the project, and the cohesion of text and music were touted by music critics. In the summer of 2006, whose mood Staples wanted to capture and record in his album, he realized what life is about, says Vince Staples. On June 8, 2015, Vince Staples published the official album cover with a message on Instagram :

“Love will tear us apart. Nov 30th, 2005 was the beginning of the loss. The following summer multiplied it. Beaten paths, crowded with the hopeless. Same song every day, listening to the words of a dead man destroyed by his own mind and body. Why? Because at the end of the day we're all dead anyway. At least where I come from. Love goals us all apart. Love for self, love for separation, love for the little we all had, love for each other, where we came from. Jabari, Chris, Shard, Tom, Richy, Tyson, Tony, Shelly, Phil, Marcel, Brandon, Steve, Jaron, Tay. Too many to name, too much to forget. Some lost to prison, some lost to Forest Lawn, some turned snitch. Some still here but it will never be the same. Bandanas, Stealing Levis and Nike Sb's. Derringers and Sidekicks. Its crazy how little you notice and how greatly those things impact. Summer of 2006, the beginning of the end of everything I thought I knew. Youth was stolen from my city that Summer and I'm left alone to tell the story. This might not make sense but that's because none of it does, we're stuck. Love goals us all apart. Summertime '06, June 30th. ”

Summertime '06, June 30. "

In the fall of 2015, Staples accompanied rappers Tyler, The Creator and A $ AP Rocky on their Rocky and Tyler tour through North America . Vince completed the Circa '06 tour, which was part of the album Summertime '06 , in December 2015, and from late February to mid-March 2016, with the venues also being limited to the United States and Canada .

On January 28, 2016, the Australian DJ and music producer Flume released the single "Smoke & Retribution", which was created in collaboration with Vince Staples and Kučka. The single rose to number 23 in the Australian charts in February, increasing Vince Staples' awareness in Australia.

2016: Prima Donna

The EP Prima Donna was released by Vince Staples on August 26, 2016. A corresponding ten-minute short film with the same title, which was produced by Nabil Elderkin , followed on September 1 . The seven-track EP was produced by James Blake , No ID , John Hill and DJ Dahi. Kilo Kish and ASAP Rocky took part as guest musicians.

2017: Big Fish Theory

On June 23, 2017, Vince Staples released his second studio album, Big Fish Theory . In advance he published the single "BagBak", as well as the singles "Big Fish" and "Rain Come Down" with their respective music videos on his YouTube channel. In Big Fish Theory , Vince Staples increasingly incorporated elements from the house and Detroit techno genres and was supported by producers Christian Rich, Flume , GTA, Jimmy Edgar, Justin Vernon, Sophie, Ray Brady and Zack Sekoff. He received musical and vocal support from ASAP Rocky , Damon Albarn , Juicy J , Kilo Kish, Kendrick Lamar , Ty Dolla Sign and Ray J, among others . The album belonging to the tour The Life Aquatic Tour through the USA and Canada named Staples in reference to the film Die Tiefseetaucher (original title: The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou ) by Wes Anderson . He was accompanied by Kilo Kish.

2018: FM!

The album FM! published Vince Staples on November 2nd, 2018. He collaborated with Jay Rock , Ty Dolla Sign and E-40, among others . FM! is based on the concept of a radio show. The beats of the individual pieces of music, which are suitable for clubs and parties, hide a second, serious level. In the texts, Vince criticizes the reality blindness of radio and TV consumers, who based on this often create an idealized and unrealistic picture of the life of their idols. In December of that year, Vince announced the Smile, You're on Camera Tour , which will start in February 2019 .

reception

In June 2015, Vince Staples was selected by the US music magazine XXL for 2015's XXL Freshman Class . With the appointment of Vince Staples as one of the promising newcomers on the hip-hop scene, XXL Staples honored previous works, especially the EP Hell Can Wait , as well as the single "Nate", and significantly increased expectations regarding the debut that followed at the end of June -Albums Summertime '06 .

Personal

Vince Staples said in an interview with CNN that he had never drunk alcohol, smoked cannabis, tobacco or any other drugs or used any other drugs, except for the drugs his doctor had prescribed for him for his asthma . He has already criticized the glorification of drug abuse in hip-hop culture several times in interviews and also in his lyrics .

Staples is passionate about the Sprite lemonade . He regularly pays homage to the non-alcoholic soft drink in an ironic way in his tweets and equates the drink with pure joie de vivre. Surreptitious advertising for Sprite became a running gag for Staples until he was finally allowed to officially represent Sprite in March 2016 with the advertisement "We're All People" as part of the #ObeyYourThirst campaign .

In June 2016, Staples announced its participation in a program at the YMCA Long Beach , a youth institute in his hometown of Long Beach. Financed by donations and its partner Levi's , the YMCA offers 20 children and young people from the local Hamilton Middle School courses in music and film production, graphic design, 3D printing and product design. In addition to financial support and the creation of public attention, Staples also participated in the project by leading a workshop on songwriting . Vince Staples emphasized to the Long Beacher newspaper Press-Telegram the importance of offering local children and young people opportunities and opportunities, promoting them and showing them real life models. He himself was denied this, he only had examples of how to put everything in the sand or was surrounded by models of life that he had no desire.
