Nabil Elderkin

Nabil Elderkin (* 1982 in Chicago , Illinois , USA ) is an Australian professional photographer and director of video and cinema films.

Life

When Elderkin was two years old, Elderkin moved to Port Macquarie , New South Wales , Australia with his family, an American father and mother from Iran . There he went to high school , played sports, and was an avid surfer . His first contact with photography began with his shots of the surfing scene in Australia.

The family separated in the early 1990s and Nabil followed his mother to Chicago, where he began studying photography. In the following years he photographed music groups, music concerts and the performances of DJs from Chicago. He came into contact with rapper Kanye West , who is still very close to this day. The two published an illustrated book about West's Glow in the Dark Tour of 2008.

Since 2005, Elderkin has directed music videos from various bands and singers nearly twenty times. In 2007 he went to the Democratic Republic of the Congo after the civil war . The resulting photo exhibition was shown in 2007 at the UN headquarters on the East River in Manhattan , New York City . His first documentary Bouncing Cats , financed by the Red Bull company , was made in 2009 in Kampala , Uganda and shows how young people there try to make a living as break dancers . His customers include Coca-Cola , Foot Locker , Nike , adidas and Vans as well as Oxfam .

Elderkin lives and works today (2014) in Los Angeles.

Awards

  • The film Bouncing Cats was awarded at three documentary film festivals in 2010.
