Kampala [ kamˈpaːla , engl. kæmˈpɑːlə ] is the capital of Uganda with about 1.5 million inhabitants and at the same time one of the 127 administrative units at the district level of Uganda . It is located a few kilometers from Lake Victoria .
history
The name "Kampala" is derived from Kasozi K'Empala , which means "hill of the antelopes" in the Luganda language.
Kampala grew around a fort built by Frederick Lugard in 1890 for the British East Africa Company . The central Nakasero hill in Kampala is said to have been grazed by domesticated impala antelopes , which were owned by the King of Buganda , at the time the city was founded . From 1900 to 1905 the place was the capital of the British Protectorate Uganda. In 1962, Kampala replaced Entebbe as the national capital. Large parts of the city were destroyed after the fall of the dictator Idi Amin in 1979 and in the civil war that followed, but have been rebuilt since then.
population
Kampala is originally a settlement of the Luganda- speaking Baganda , who still make up a large part of the population. In addition, members of many other Ugandan ethnic groups as well as Asians and Europeans also live in the African metropolis.

2008 estimate | 1,420,000 |
2,843,000 people live in the agglomeration of Kampala (as of 2017). Since the population of Uganda is growing rapidly and there is also a migration to the cities, Kampala is one of the fastest growing metropolises in the world. In 2050, the agglomeration is expected to have a population of 9.4 million. For the year 2100, the forecast is even 40.1 million. Even if such long-term forecasts are subject to great uncertainties, they illustrate the enormous challenges that the city will be confronted with in the future due to its extreme demographic growth.
Culture
The Makerere University , founded in 1922, and the Kampala Technical University, founded in 1954, are based in Kampala.

A few kilometers outside the center of Kampala are the Kasubi Tombs , the tombs of the kings of Buganda. In 2001 they were included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. In March 2010, the central burial site burned down under previously unexplained circumstances. The capital thus lost its most important cultural and historical sight.

economy

The main port for the city is Port Bell, about 10 km away . With the Uganda Railway , built by the British colonial rulers between 1896 and 1931, there is a rail connection in the direction of Nairobi and Mombasa and thus to the Indian Ocean , other rail connections to Malaba , Kasese and Pakwach are only used for freight traffic.
A hotel belonging to the Sheraton chain is now centrally located on Nakasero Hill in the middle of the Jubilee Gardens, an extensive park.
The state-owned Kiira Motors Corporation is building Africa's first factory for electrically powered cars and buses in Kampala. The plant is expected to start producing 5,000 vehicles per year from July 2021.
