Hoima is a district in western Uganda . The capital of the district is Hoima .
location
The district of Hoima borders in the north on the district Buliisa , in the northeast on the district Masindi , in the east on the district Kyankwanzi , in the south on the district Kibaale , in the southwest on the district Ntoroko and in the west on Lake Albert opposite the Democratic Republic of the Congo . Hoima, the location of the district headquarters, is approximately 230 kilometers by road northwest of Kampala , the capital of Uganda and the largest city in the country.
history
The area was part of the former Bunyoro District . In independence, Bunyoro was a kingdom and Hoima was a unit within the kingdom. When the Ugandan kingdoms were abolished in 1967, Bunyoro became a district. In 1974, Bunyoro was divided into North and South Bunyoro, the latter in turn being divided into the districts of Hoima and Masindi in 1980.
Demographics
The population is estimated at 374,500 for 2020. In the same year, 34.7 percent of them lived in urban regions and 65.3 percent in rural regions.

economy
Agriculture with an emphasis on food crops is the backbone of the local economy. The fishery at Lake Albertsee employs several hundred people. The recent discovery of petroleum in the district is increasingly attracting people from the district for the many activities that the industry brings with it.
