Buvuma is a district in central Uganda .

geography

The district lies on the archipelago of Buvuma Islands in Lake Victoria and has no territory on the mainland of Uganda. The Buvuma district borders in the north on the district Jinja , in the east on the district Mayuge , in the south on the country Tanzania and in the west and northwest on the district Buikwe . Kitamilo , the district capital , is about 30 kilometers south of the city of Jinja , the next large metropolitan area .

population

In 1991 the national census estimated the population of the district at 18,500. During the 2002 census , the population of the Buvuma district was estimated at 42,500. In the 2014 census, the population was 89,890. Today there are over 140,000 households in the district.

economy

Women collect and collect coal from kilns for home use.

The four main economic activities in the district are fishing , tourism , timber harvesting and the production of charcoal . Subsistence farming is practiced by the inhabitants of the islands. The majority of the islanders are very dependent on fishing. Overfishing is therefore a problem. The district has 26 forest reserves, but many are threatened by unregulated logging and are used for the extraction of charcoal. There is little animal husbandry in the district, with most of the livestock consumed locally in the district.

administration

The Buvuma district consists of 52 scattered islands in the northern part of Lake Victoria . The largest island is called Buvuma , just like the district that was created by parliament on July 1, 2010 . He was previously part of the Mukono District . Administratively, the district is divided into nine administrative units:
