Jinja is a city in southeast Uganda with about 76,000 inhabitants. It is the fourth largest city in Uganda and the capital of the Jinja district . It is located near the outlet of the White Nile on the coast of Lake Victoria .
history
Jinja was founded in 1901 as a trading post.
Infrastructure
Jinja has a station on the Uganda Railway , which connects the city with Nairobi and Mombasa on the Indian Ocean and with the capital Kampala . Passenger traffic was discontinued in 1997, since then the railway has only been responsible for freight traffic. Jinja also has a port that is used for goods traffic across Lake Victoria . Nearby is the Owen Falls Dam , which is responsible for almost all of the electricity supply in Uganda and parts of Kenya. A bypass road runs past Jinja and directs the main traffic between Kenya and Kampala past the city.
economy
Agricultural products such as cotton , sugar cane , corn and peanuts are produced in the area. The industry produces copper , metal and wood products, textiles and soap . A hydropower plant is currently being built that will supply electricity to more than five million households ( Bujagali Dam ).
