Mpigi is a district in central Uganda . Like most other Ugandan districts, it is named after its capital, Mpigi .

geography

The Mpigi district borders in the north and east by the District Wakiso , the south by the district of Kalangala , on the southwest by the district Kalungu , the west by the district Butambala and in the northwest on the district Mityana . The city of Mpigi , where the district headquarters is located, is about 37 kilometers west of Kampala , Uganda's capital.

History and administration

In the 1970s , the Mpigi district included the regions of the Buganda kingdom of Kyaddondo, Busiro, Mawokota, Butambala and Gomba. In 2000 , Kyaddondo and Busiro were accepted into the Wakiso district . In 2010 Gomba separated from the Gomba district and Butambala became the Butambala district . Mawokota remained the only part of the Mpigi district. The subdistricts are:

Population development

In 1991 the district population was estimated at about 157,400 inhabitants. The next census in 2002 estimated the district's population at around 187,800 people, with an annual growth rate of 1.4%. In 2012 , the population in the district was estimated at around 215,500. The district is primarily a rural district, with only 8.4% of the population living in urban areas.

economy

The main economic activity in the Mpigi district is agriculture . Products grown include: sweet potatoes , beans , cassava , corn , bananas , peanuts , coffee , cotton , tomatoes , cabbage , onions and avocado .

education

The district has a total of 324 elementary schools with 246 state, 57 private and 21 community schools . It has 37 secondary schools ; 16 are government schools, 10 are private and 11 are community schools.

The district also has 3 technical institutions , 3 pedagogical colleges and Uganda Martyrs University Nkozi .

health

The district has 17 government pharmacies, 13 health centers, 4 private pharmacies and 24 clinics. It also has a government hospital in Gombe with 104 beds and the Entebbe hospital with 147 beds, as well as the Catholic medical bureau Kisubi with 74 beds and the Nkozi hospital with 90 beds.

Attractions

The Mpanga Forest Reserve is an hour's drive from Kampala and is one of the district's attractions. Many natural attractions, such as the shores of Lake Victoria , forests and natural and cultural sites, are not used for tourism.
