Rakai is a district in the central region of Uganda . The district headquarters are located in the city of Rakai .

geography

The district of Rakai borders in the northwest with the district Lyantonde , in the north with the district Lwengo , in the northeast with the district Masaka , in the east with the district Kalangala , in the south with the region Kagera in the Republic of Tanzania , in the southwest with the district Isingiro and to the Kiruhura district in the northwest. The city of Rakai is approximately 65.5 kilometers by road southwest of Masaka , the largest city in the region.

population

The census of 1991 showed a population of about 330,400 inhabitants. In 2002, the next census estimated the district's population at 404,330, with an annual growth rate of 1.8 percent. In 2012 the district population was estimated at 484,400 inhabitants. The national household and census carried out on August 27, 2014 put the population of the district at 518,008 inhabitants. The main language is Luganda .

history

Rakai District was established in 1980 and is made up of four former Masaka District counties that were established in 1966 when the Buganda Kingdom was divided into districts.

On July 1, 2006, the northern part of the district known as Kabula County was divided into Lyantonde District. The first documented case of HIV or AIDS in Uganda was on the shores of Lake Victoria in the Rakai district. The disease has struck the district population. The prevalence rates in 2014 were 12 percent.

economy

Agriculture is one of the main economic activities in the district with an emphasis on foods such as cassava , corn, sweet potatoes, sorghum , bananas and finger millet . Among the crops belongs coffee, fruit and vegetables such as tomatoes, pineapple, onions and cabbage. There is also livestock farming. Bank Uganda Ltd is the bank . and Centenary Bank Ltd.

Trade and transport

Due to its proximity to Uganda's border with Tanzania , the district experiences cross-border trade to and from Bukoba . The Masaka-Mutukula Road crosses the area in a north-south direction.

administration

The city of Rakai is the main communal, political and administrative center of the district. Other urban centers in the district include Kalisizo , Kyotera , Kakuuto, and Mutukula . The district is divided into the following administrative units:

education

The district has a total of 302 elementary schools , of which 259 are government schools , 40 are private and 3 are community schools . For secondary schools , the district has more than 43 schools, 19 of which are government, 9 private and 15 community schools. It also has a technical college and 1 teacher training center .

health

Major health problems in the district include malaria , childhood malnutrition , diarrhea , HIV / AIDS , childbirth complications, respiratory infections and skin diseases .

The district has 41 government pharmacies, 21 health centers, 2 health centers and 2 hospitals. It also has several private and non-governmental organizations . The hospitals are located in Kalisizo , Kakuuto and one in Rakai , among others .
