Rakaia is a place in the Ashburton District of the Canterbury regionon the South Island of New Zealand .
geography
The place is located around 55 km southwest of Christchurch and around 28 km northeast of Ashburton , in the Canterbury Plains and on the southern bank of the Rakaia River , which flows into the Pacific Ocean around 21 km south-southeast .
Infrastructure
Road traffic
The New Zealand State Highway 1 runs through Rakaia and connects the town directly with Ashburton and Christchurch . A subordinate country road runs west towards Ashburton Forks and after about 31 km crosses the New Zealand State Highway 77 , which connects Methven to the north .
Rail transport
The railway line of the South Island Main Trunk Railway also runs through the village, but it no longer has a stop in the village. Immediately at the end of the village in a northeastern direction, the two cross the wide gravel bed of the Rakaia River with the longest road and rail bridges in the country . Both bridges are about 1750 meters long. From 1880 until its closure in 1976, the Methven Branch in Rakaia branched off from the South Island Main Trunk Railway in the direction of Methven .
population
In the 2013 census, the town had 1,113 inhabitants, 18.5% more than in the 2006 census.
Sports
In a large, jumping is salmon from fiberglass placed. This points out the importance of the river for salmon fishing. The place also has an 18-hole golf course.
