Ashburton ( Māori Hakatere ) is a city in the Ashburton District of Canterbury on the South Island of New Zealand . The city is the administrative seat of the district in which it is located.
geography
The city with its 18,471 inhabitants is located on New Zealand State Highway 1 , halfway between Christchurch and Timaru . It is around 80 km to Christchurch in the northeast and around 65 km to Timaru in the southwest. The Ashburton River flows through the city and joins the Pacific Ocean 17 km further south .
economy
The city is located in the middle of the Canterbury Plains , an extensive, fertile, but at times dry plain, in which mostly farming is carried out. New Zealand's only bus manufacturer, Designline , has its headquarters in the city.

Another New Zealand State Highway , State Highway 77 , branches off from State Higway 1 to the northwest in the middle of the city . Ashburton is also connected to the South Island Main Trunk Railway , on which the Southerner , a passenger service from Christchurch via Dunedin to Invercargill , ran until 2002 and has only been used by freight trains since then.

The city's only daily newspaper is the Ashburton Guardian .

The Mount Hutt ski area is about 20 kilometers northwest of the village of Methven .
