The Ashburton Guardian is a regional, privately owned newspaper in New Zealand . Its catchment area is in the central part of the Canterbury region on the South Island . The newspaper is based in Ashburton .

history

Charles Dixon and Horace Weeks , editors of the Ashburton Herald , founded the Ashburton Guardian in 1879 tocompete with the newspapers Ashburton Mail (1877) and Evening Echo (1878), both owned by politician and investor Joseph Ivess . In 1880 the new owners George Wright and Hugo Friedlander merged the Herald with the Guardian and brought out the new newspaper under the name Ashburton Guardian .

In 1884 William Jules Steward acquired the Ashburton Mail and in 1885 bought the Ashburton Guardian . Steward was a politician and member of the House of Representatives from 1881 to 1911 and had too little time to take care of the newspaper business. He leased the sheet to Henry Wills in the 1890s and eventually sold it to Robert Bell in 1900 . Bell discontinued the Ashburton Mail and focused on the business of the Ashburton Guardian .

The newspaper is still owned by the Bell family today .
