Nwoya is a district in the north of Uganda . Like most districts in Uganda, it is named for its main communal, administrative, and commercial center, Nwoya , the district's capital.

geography

The district is bordered by Amuru District in the north , Gulu District in the northeast , Oyam District in the east , Kiryandongo District in the southeast , Masindi District in the south and Buliisa District in the southwest . Nwoya, the main political, administrative and commercial center of the district, is about 44 kilometers southwest of the city of Gulu , the largest metropolitan area in the region. This place is approximately 330 kilometers (by road) north of the city of Kampala , the capital of Uganda and the largest metropolitan area. The district is part of the Acholi region . The area of ​​the district is 4736.2 km².

history

The district is one of the newest districts in Uganda. It was founded by a law of the parliament and was founded on July 1, 2010. Before that date, it was part of the Amuru district .

Demographics

In 1991 the district population was estimated at 37,900. In 2002 the 41,010 inhabitants were counted. In 2012 the population was estimated at 54,000.

economy

Prior to 2013, subsistence farming and ranching were the main economic source in the district. More recently, oil deposits have been found and more commercial extraction is planned.

In the district is the Murchison Falls National Park , as well as several well-known waterfalls .
