Ntungamo is a district ( district ) in southwestern Uganda with 540,800 inhabitants. Like almost all districts of Uganda , it is named after its capital.

geography

Ntungamo is bordered by the districts of Kabale in the south, Rukingiri in the west, Bushenyi and Mbarara in the north and Mbarara District in the east as well as the states of Tanzania and Rwanda in the southeast.

At 1,852 m, the Igurua is one of the highest mountains in the country (see list of mountains or elevations in Uganda ).

Demographics

192,135 men (corresponds to 41.7%) and 206,189 women (corresponds to 58.3%) live in the district. 99.1% of the population of Ntungamo lives in the country and only 0.9% in the city (status: Census 1991). The fertility rate is seven children and the average life expectancy is 52 years. Child mortality is 9.7% and the mortality rate is 0.5%.

Economy and Infrastructure

Agriculture

The main occupation is agriculture, in which 85% of the population work. Mainly matooke and beans are grown. Coffee is the most important grain. Livestock is predominantly in the sub-counties of Ngoma, Rweikiniro, Rugarama, Rubaare and Rukoni.

The district has two main roads, one of which is paved. It is about a six- hour drive from the capital, Kampala .
