Amuru is a district in northern Uganda. It is named after its administrative center, the city of Amuru . The district is mostly rural and, despite its size, has no paved roads.
geography
Amuru is bounded to the north by the Adjumani district , to the northeast by the Lamwo district and South Sudan , to the east by the Gulu district , to the south by the Nwoya district , to the southwest by the Nebbi district and to the west by the Arua district . The capital of the district is Amuru , which is about 60 kilometers (by road) northwest of Gulu , the largest city in the region. The district is part of Acholiland .
history
The district of Amuru was founded in 2006 by the Ugandan parliament, before it was part of the Gulu district . The city of Atiak in the Amuru district was the scene of the Atiak massacre on April 20, 1995 , in which rebels of the Lord's Resistance Army shot about 300 Acholis .
Demographics
In 1991 the population of Amuru District was 88,700, in 2002 it had 135,700 inhabitants. The population then grew by around 2.8% annually and rose to 178,800 inhabitants by 2012.
