Nakasongola is a district in the central region of Uganda . The administrative seat of the district is located in the city ​​of the same name, Nakasongola .

geography

The district of Nakasongola borders in the northwest with the district Apac , in the northeast with the district Amolatar , in the east with the district Kayunga , in the south with the district Luweero , in the southwest with the district Nakaseke and in the northwest with the district Masindi . Nakasongola, the most important municipal, administrative and commercial center of the district, is about 140 kilometers by road north of Kampala , the capital of Uganda.

Demography and ethnology

The census of 1991 showed a population of about 100,500 inhabitants. In 2002, the census estimated the population at 127,100 people, of whom 62,312 (49.7 percent) were female and 62,985 (50.3 percent) were male. In 2012, the district's population was estimated at 156,500. The Nakasongola district is dominated by indigenous Bantu , the Buruuli . You speak Ruruli . They usually live in harmony with other ethnic groups such as the Hima , Nyarwanda , Karamajong , Ganda , Luo , Banyoro and Bakenyi .

The Nakasongola District was established in 1997. Before it was part of the Luweero district . The Commission of Inquiry into the Local Government System recognized in 1987 that Nakasongola was too far from the administrative center of Luweero to be administered directly from there, and that Nakasongola suffered from relative neglect due to this distance from the then district headquarters. This became the basis for the creation of the Nakasongola District in 1997. The district covers 4,909 square kilometers , 4.6% of which is permanent wetland . The district consists of three counties :

economy

The agriculture is one of the main economic activities in the district. Crops grown include foods like cassava , corn , sweet potatoes , sorghum , bananas , finger millet, and crops like coffee and cotton .

education

The district has a total of 141 primary schools , of which 118 are government schools , 7 are private and 16 are community schools . For secondary schools , the district has more than 15 schools, 3 of which are government, 5 private and 7 community schools.

health

The district has 14 government pharmacies, 5 health centers, a health center and a hospital. In addition, he has 3 private or NGO pharmacies and a hospital.

traffic

The district is connected by a paved road with Masindi and the Luwero district . However, the feeder road network is inadequate. Traveling within the district can be difficult as transportation is difficult to come by. This has a major impact on the transport of agricultural products.
