Luweero , sometimes also Luwero, is a district in central Uganda . Luweero is the capital of the district.

geography

Luweero bordered to the north of the district Nakasongola , in the east of the district Kayunga , in the southeast of the district Mukono , in the south of the district Wakiso and in the west to the district Nakaseke . The capital Luweero is about 75 kilometers (by road) north of Kampala , Uganda's capital.

history

Luweero was the site of a major uprising by the National Resistance Army rebel group and a brutal counter-insurgency by the Milton Obote government , known as the Luweero War or the " Bush War, " which killed many thousands of civilians. This took place in the early to mid- 1980s .

The area hit by the war is known as the Luweero Triangle . In 2005, Nakaseke County was split from Luweero District to Nakaseke District.

Administrative structure

Luweero is administered by the Luweero District Administration, headquartered in Luweero . There are several municipal councils in the district , each with its own city council . These are:

Demographics

The census of 1991 estimated the population of the district of 255,400 inhabitants. The census in 2002 estimated the population at 341,300 inhabitants. In 2012 the population was estimated at 440,200 inhabitants. The national census of August 2014 counted the population at 458,158 inhabitants.

economy

The agriculture is the main source of the economy in the district. It has been estimated that 85 percent of the district's population works in agriculture.

education

The district has several universities , like the University Bugema , the University Ndejje and the University of Kampala .

health

The larger hospital is the Bombo Military Hospital , which is one of two military hospitals in Uganda.

military

The district is a headquarters of the Uganda Land Forces, a unit of the Uganda People's Defense Force , which is located in Bombo .
