Civil war

Between 1987 and 2008 Pader, like large parts of northern Uganda, repeatedly suffered from attacks by the Lord's Resistance Army, which resulted in large parts of the population being driven to protected camps or safe areas. At the beginning of the 2000s, a majority of the population lived in refugee camps protected by the army.

Since 2005, however, the situation in Pader has largely calmed down and people have been able to return to their villages.
