Gulu is a city in northwest Uganda with around 150,000 inhabitants. It is the capital of the Gulu district and one of the centers of the Acholi .

religion

Gulu is the seat of the Catholic Archbishop of Gulu .

Infrastructure

The city has a connection to the meter-gauge railway line from Pakwach (on the Albert Nile) to Tororo on the border with Kenya . In principle, there is a train connection to the capital Kampala via Tororo. The railway line had been out of service since 1993. The Rift Valley Railways financed the restart of the route to the east. After the vegetation that had grown in the meantime had been removed and the route and bridges had been repaired, the first commercial (freight) train in 20 years was able to travel on the continuous meter-gauge route from the Kenyan port of Mombasa via Nairobi and Eldoret to the Kenyan border in Tororo and on to Gulu.

aviation

The Gulu Airport has a fixed runway of 3139 m length, which was built 1959th She is said to be in bad shape. Gulu Airport is the second largest airport in Uganda after Entebbe Airport and has little international traffic.

There are trunk road connections to Pakwach , to the South Sudanese border at Nimule and to Kamudini .

Gulu is connected to the capital Kampala by a continuously paved main road.

Population development

Due to the regular influx of refugees, Gulu is now the second largest city in the country by population.

Musical reception

The music band BAP engaged in their song (composed by Krumminga / Niedecken ) Noh Gulu (from the Kölschen translated: After Gulu ) the situation of children at the center, the night running away from forced recruitment as child soldiers by LRA -Rebellen protection in large , military-guarded tents set up by World Vision in Gulu.

Up to 15,000 children known as "night commuters" fled to the city each night during the fighting between the UPDF and the LRA. Since the end of hostilities in late 2006, the number of "night commuters" has decreased significantly.
