The Entebbe International Airport is the main international airport of Uganda . It is located near Entebbe on the shores of Lake Victoria , 35 kilometers from the capital Kampala . It is operated by the Civil Aviation Authority of Uganda and has two terminals .

It is also the location of a Cooperative Security Location , a military equipment store in the USA , which can be expanded into a base if necessary.

history

In 1947 the construction of the airport was decided and in 1951 it was officially opened by the British heir to the throne and later Queen Elizabeth II .

In 1976 the airport was the site of Operation Entebbe , during which an Israeli commando released hostages from the hands of Palestinian and German kidnappers .

Airlines and Destinations

International flight connections exist, for example, with Qatar Airways , Turkish Airlines , Etihad Airways , KLM , Brussels Airlines , Ethiopian Airlines and Emirates . Entebbe has connections to Doha , Istanbul , Abu Dhabi , Amsterdam , Brussels , Addis Ababa and Dubai airports . Emirates also plans to connect Entebbe with Washington in the US in the future .

Incidents

  • On March 29, 1951, the pilots of a Vickers Valetta C.1 of the Royal Air Force ( aircraft registration VW187 ) at Entebbe Airport canceled the take-off due to an engine fault . The machine rolled over the end of the runway. There were no fatalities; the aircraft was damaged beyond repair.
