The Stannochy Bridge is a road bridge near the Scottish town of Brechin in the Council Area Angus . In 1971 the bridge was included in the Scottish Monument List in the highest monument category A.
history
The construction of the Stannochy Bridge was completed in 1826. James Smith is responsible for the design . Architectural details suggest Robert Stevenson's involvement . Possibly a relative of Smiths carried out the construction of the recently completed Marykirk Bridge , which Stevenson planned.
description
The masonry viaduct spans the South Esk about two kilometers southwest of Brechin. Today it leads the B9134, which branches off from the A935, with a bricked segment arch over the river. This has a clear width of over 30.5 m. The masonry consists of blocks roughly hewn rubble stone , which was broken in the region. The roadway is 4.3 meters wide.
