Robert Stevenson (born June 8, 1772 in Glasgow , † July 12, 1850 in Edinburgh ) was a Scottish lighthouse builder and stepson of Thomas Smith , who was also a lighthouse builder.

Life

From 1786 Stevenson was apprenticed to a gunsmith . He then learned from his stepfather Thomas Smith. Stevenson's mother, Jane, married Smith in 1792. Stevenson became a partner in his stepfather's business in 1800.

Robert Stevenson continued the family tradition of lighthouse farmers founded by his stepfather. His three sons David , Alan and Thomas , as well as his grandsons David Alan Stevenson and Charles Alexander Stevenson and his great-grandson Alan Stevenson followed him in building lighthouses.

The Scottish writer Robert Louis Stevenson , who was best known for his work " Treasure Island ", was the son of Thomas and thus the grandson of Robert Stevenson.

In 1815 he was elected a member ( Fellow ) of the Royal Society of Edinburgh .
