David Stevenson (engineer)

David Stevenson (born January 11, 1815 in Edinburgh , † July 17, 1886 ) was a Scottish engineer and designer of nearly thirty lighthouses around Scotland .

David came from a family of lighthouse builders in Scotland that had been started by his father. He built the lighthouses between 1854 and 1880 together with his brother Thomas Stevenson . His two sons, David Alan Stevenson and Charles Alexander Stevenson, continued his work.

In 1844 he was elected a member ( Fellow ) of the Royal Society of Edinburgh .

In Japan he is known for his help for Richard Henry Brunton , where a number of earthquake-proof lighthouses were built using a new method .
