The Bressay Lighthouse , German Bressay lighthouse , is a lighthouse on the Scottish Shetland island of Bressay . In 1977 the lighthouse was listed in the Scottish Monument Lists in Category B. The Bressay lighthouse ceased operations in 2012.
The beacon is at a height of 32 m above sea level, resulting in a range of 23 nautical miles (around 42 km). The tower's identifier was two white flashes every 20 seconds.
history
In November 1854, the construction of a lighthouse in the southwest of the island of Bressay at the southern entrance of the Bressay Sound , which separates Bressay from the main island of Mainland , was requested. After negotiations about assuming the costs, the first work on the site began in February 1856. The well-known lighthouse architects Thomas and David Stevenson were responsible for the planning as engineers . The beacon was lit for the first time on August 31, 1858. In 1905 the tower was renovated and new buildings were added. In July 1967 the system was electrified and the associated fog horn was finally stopped in 1987. After the lighthouse was automated in 1989, operations ceased on September 12, 2012. A corresponding message was issued in the previous month. To safeguard shipping traffic, a new signal light with a range of ten nautical miles with the same identifier was installed.
