Thomas Stevenson (born July 22, 1818 in Edinburgh , † May 8, 1887 ) was a Scottish engineer and lighthouse builder.

Life

He was the youngest son of Robert Stevenson and the brother of Alan and David Stevenson , who were also lighthouse builders. Thomas' son Robert Louis Stevenson , to the chagrin of his father, did not follow the family tradition, but gained fame as a writer .

Between 1854 and 1886 Thomas Stevenson designed more than thirty lighthouses in and around Scotland together with his brother David and later also with his son David Alan Stevenson . He also developed the " Stevenson screen " named after him and still used today to shield meteorological instruments from precipitation and heat radiation.

In 1848 he was elected a member ( Fellow ) of the Royal Society of Edinburgh .
