The Rhuvaal Lighthouse , also Ruvaal Lighthouse or German Rhuvaal lighthouse , is a lighthouse on the Scottish Hebridean island of Islay . It is located in the northeast of the island at the tip of Cape Ruvaal , which marks the northernmost point of the island. There are no large settlements in the vicinity. The lighthouse is listed in the Scottish monument lists in category B.

After the need for a lighthouse at this position was determined in 1835, this was later planned by the siblings Thomas and David Stevenson and completed in 1859 after a two-year construction period. The lighthouse marks the northern entrance to Islay Sound . Near the southern entrance is a lighthouse on McArthur's Head, also constructed by the Stevenson brothers .

description

The round tower, built of jointed sandstone, rises 36 m in height. At the base, the structure measures 5.8 m and tapers slightly upwards. Several rectangular windows with lintels made of sandstone are let into the tower . Inside, a stone spiral staircase leads to the upper platform, where the beacon is housed under a hood. The original lens optics from 1858 are still present. The entire complex cost £ 7,437 to build. The headlight is visible from about 31 km.

There are two elongated dwellings nearby for the lighthouse keepers. According to a report from the time of completion, they are more reminiscent of "dog houses" than residential houses.
