Lighthouse at Ruvaal

Ruvaal , also Rhuvaal or Gaelic Rubh 'a' Mhail is a cape in the northeast of the Hebridean island of Islay and marks its northernmost point. It is located on the Atlantic coast about nine kilometers southeast of the island of Oronsay and marks the entrance to the Islay Sound , which separates Islay from the neighboring island of Jura , which is five kilometers away . The Port Askaig ferry terminal is about 10 km south. Three kilometers to the southwest is the 364 m high Sgarbh Breac, the highest point of this part of the island.

The siblings Thomas and David Stevenson built a lighthouse at Ruvaal in 1859. The 36 m high and 5.8 m diameter tower cost £ 7,437 to build. The headlight is visible from about 31 km. According to a report from the time of completion, the dwellings built nearby for the lighthouse keepers are more reminiscent of “dog houses”.
