The Islay Sound ( English Sound of Islay , Gaelic : An Caol Ileach ) is a strait in Scotland . It separates the Hebridean islands of Islay and Jura . Islay Sound runs north-south and is a little less than a kilometer wide at its narrowest point. Administratively it belongs to the Council Area Argyll and Bute .

A ferry connects Port Askaig on Islay across the Sound with the Feolin jetty on Jura and is the only ferry connection to Jura. Another ferry connects Port Askaig with the Kintyre peninsula . With Bunnahabhain and Caol Ila, two whiskey distilleries are located on Islay directly on the coast of Islay Sound , with Caol Ila itself being a Gaelic expression for Islay Sound .

The most powerful tidal power plant in the world is to be installed in Islay Sound . Ten turbines should provide enough energy to supply 5,000 residential houses. The estimated construction cost is £ 40 million  .
