The North Channel ( Irish and Scottish Gaelic Sruth na Maoile , English Straits of Moyle , Sea of Moyle or North Channel ) is a branch of the Irish Sea and separates Scotland from Northern Ireland . The north channel is part of the Scottish Sea .
At the north exit, between the Mull of Kintyre and Fair Head at Ballycastle , the north channel is about 15 miles wide, at its narrowest point between the Mull of Kintyre and Torr Head only 13 miles wide. Between the Northern Irish coast east of Bangor and Stranraer , the North Channel is about 40 km wide. The deepest point at around 300 meters is called Beaufort's Dyke .
The small Northern Irish island of Rathlin is located in the North Channel.
