Larne ( Irish Latharna ) is a port city in Northern Ireland . It is located at the northern end of Larne Lough , a narrow inlet that connects the city to the North Channel between the island of Ireland and Scotland.

The city has a population of about 19,000 (2011 Census: 18,875) and is located in County Antrim , about 36 kilometers (23 miles ) north of Belfast and just as far east of Ballymena . Larne was the administrative seat of the former district of the same name , which in 2015 became part of the Mid and East Antrim district.

East of the city is the widely visible Ballylumford power station, one of the most important in Northern Ireland.

The Olderfleet Castle , the Chaine Memorial and Carnfunnock Country Park are all places of interest .

Larne has a modern ferry port . There are boat connections with P&O to Scotland ( Cairnryan and Troon ).

Larne is the northern beginning of the E 1 , which runs along the Irish east coast via Belfast and Dublin to Wexford in the south of the island of Ireland and continues on the west coast of Spain and Portugal . It runs as the A8 to Newtownabbey and then as the M2 to Belfast.

Larne is the terminus of a Northern Ireland Railways rail connection from Belfast at Larne Harbor .

In the Ulster cycle of Irish mythology , Larne is the setting for the tragicomic tale Aided Loegairi Buadaig ("The Death of Loegaires the Victorious").
