Gareth Gerald McAuley (born December 5, 1979 in Larne ) is a Northern Irish former football player who played on the position of central defender and was most recently under contract with the Scottish first division club Glasgow Rangers . From 2005 to 2018 he played 80 full internationals for Northern Ireland .

Career

In the club

McAuley first played for smaller clubs in Northern Ireland and won the Northern Irish Cup with Coleraine FC in 2003. After losing the 2004 cup final, he ventured to England at the age of 24 to fourth division club Lincoln City , who paid £ 10,000 as a transfer fee. As sixth, they initially missed direct promotion to the third division and then failed in the playoff promotion final to Southend United . In the following season they were only seventh and failed in the semi-finals of the promotion playoffs. McAuley then moved to the second division Leicester City , with whom he was first 19th and then relegated third from bottom. He then moved to league competitor Ipswich Town for 1.9 million euros , with whom he reached places 9, 15 and 13. In his second season there he received his first red card on September 15, 2009 in the 90th minute of the game against Nottingham Forest . In the 2010/11 League Cup he was even able to reach the semi-finals with Ipswich, where they lost 3-0 in the second leg against Arsenal after a 1-0 home game . After the season he was then able to move to the first division club West Bromwich Albion on a free transfer , where he became an important man in the defense. In five seasons he was there 10th, 8th, 17th, 13th and 14th and once barely escaped relegation. In the FA Cup “The Baggies” were eliminated in the fourth in 2012, in the third in 2013 and 2014, in the quarter-finals in 2015 and in 2016 against the second division FC Reading in the last sixteen. At the end of the 2014/15 season, in which he only made 24 league appearances, he received a contract extension as a 35-year-old until the summer of 2016. After he remained a regular this season and played 34 of the 38 league games, he was then for a Tied to the club for another year. After 203 league appearances, McAuley West Bromwich Albion left in the summer of 2018 when his contract expired, the club was relegated from the Premier League at the end of the season.

The defender found a new club in early September 2018 with Scottish first division club Glasgow Rangers . There ended his career as a player in 2019.

In the national team

He made his debut for the Northern Irish national team at the age of 25 on June 4, 2005 in the 4-1 defeat in the friendly against Germany when he came on for Keith Gillespie when he was 3-1 in the 70th minute . For the next three games, etc. a. he was not included in qualifying for the 2006 World Cup and then sat on the bench twice. On November 15, he came on as a substitute for a 1-1 draw in the friendly against Portugal in the second half. In the next game in March 2006 he played against Estonia for the first time over 90 minutes. He was then used in the two following friendlies, but he only sat on the bench three times in the next eleven games. It was not until October 2007 that he was used again in the last three qualifying games for the European Championship 2008 and thus came to his first competitive games. In the three games, the Northern Irish lost their qualification for the European Championship finals with a 1-1 draw in Sweden and a 1-0 defeat against eventual European champions Spain . From then on he was a regular player who was rarely absent or only occasionally substituted or substituted, otherwise he mostly played for 90 minutes.

He scored his first international goal on February 11, 2009 in a 3-0 win against San Marino as part of qualifying for the 2010 World Cup in the seventh minute to make it 1-0. He was used in eight out of ten qualifying games and again the Northern Irish gambled away in the last three games qualifying for the finals. In the subsequent qualification for the Euro 2012 , he was even used in all games of the Northern Irish and was also allowed to wear the captain's armband three times for the missing regular captain Aaron Hughes in one qualification and two Nations Cup games . However, the Northern Irish had little to do with the outcome of the qualification, as they could only win two games. In the last game, he also scored an own goal against Italy to make it 3-0. In qualifying for the 2014 World Cup , he scored two goals in a 3-2 win against Luxembourg , but he also saw three yellow cards and had to sit out once. On March 5, 2014, he received his only red card in an international match in the friendly against Cyprus .

The qualification for the EM 2016 went surprisingly well for the Northern Irish. They only lost the fourth group game against Romania and could only achieve a goalless draw against the Romanians in the home game, but in the end they had one point more than the defensive Romanians. As group winners, they qualified for a major tournament for the first time after the 1986 World Cup and for the first time ever for a European Championship finals. McAuley was used in all games. On May 18, 2016, he was appointed to the squad for the finals in France by team manager Michael O'Neill and was part of the team from the start. In the second game against Ukraine, he took a 1-0 lead with a header and thus Northern Ireland's first ever European Championship goal. The game ended 2-0 and helped the team to qualify for the last 16. There he became a tragic hero when, a quarter of an hour before the end , he steered a cross from Welsh Gareth Bale into his own network and thus initiated the tournament's end. In the qualification for the 2018 World Cup , which began after the EM , he was part of the team and was used in eight of the ten group games. As second in the group behind world champions Germany, the Northern Irish reached the play-offs of the best runners-up in the group. Here he was used in the two games against Switzerland. The Northern Irish lost their home game 1-0 and only achieved a goalless draw in Switzerland. In the 2018/19 UEFA Nations League , he was only used in the last game on November 18, 2018, which was lost like the other three games. After that he was called up for three qualifying games for the 2020 European Football Championship , but not used. On September 30, 2019, he announced the end of his career after 80 international matches. With 80 international matches, he is 10th among the Northern Irish national players (as of January 26, 2020).
