The Linfield Football Club is an established in 1886 Northern Irish football club in Belfast . Linfield was the first champions of all of Ireland in 1890 and has since played continuously in the top division of the first all-Irish, but since 1921/22 purely Northern Irish NIFL Premiership (formerly Irish League). With 54 national championships, Linfield shares the record for the most national championships worldwide with the Glasgow Rangers (also 54 titles).

history

Logo from when the association was founded

The club was founded in March 1886 by workers at the Linfield Spinning Mill , a wool mill , as the Linfield Athletic Club . Even when it was founded, the club was Protestant and has remained so ever since.

In the first few years the club played on a meadow behind the factory. This (as well as the later alternative place) had to be abandoned as a venue soon, so that Linfield became homeless at the turn of the century and played all games on a foreign court and was only able to move into his present home, Windsor Park, in 1905. Nevertheless, the club was extremely successful in the first few years after its establishment, the first three championships in Ireland could be won, with only two lost games in three years. The club was soon considered the most successful club on the Irish island.

In the first half of the 20th century, even before the independence of the Republic of Ireland in 1921, the rivalry between Linfield and the Protestant Glentoran FC and the large Catholic club Belfast Celtic shaped the championships. With the separation of the two Irish associations, Linfield finally also managed to win all seven competitions held in Northern Ireland in which they could participate.

In particular, the duels with Belfast Celtic, whose home stadium was in the immediate vicinity of Windsor Park, shaped the Northern Irish championship from then on. After Celtic was mostly superior in the 1940s, there was a scandal at Linfielder's home game against Celtic in the 1948/49 season, which led to the dissolution of Belfast Celtic FC. In an otherwise inconspicuous draw (1-1), a Celtic defender seriously injured Linfield player Bob Bryson . After the final whistle, Linfield's supporters stormed the field and beat up the Celtic players.

The resulting withdrawal of Belfast Celtic from the Northern Irish League is blamed in part for the league's subsequent loss of quality.

After the elimination of Belfast Celtic, Linfield dominated the Northern Irish League at will, with the so-called "Team of the Century" being particularly emphasized, which was able to repeat the success of 1921 in 1961/62 with victories in all seven possible competitions.

In the 1980s, however, fan riots became such a big problem that UEFA even condemned Linfield in 1988 to play all European Cup home games on neutral ground ( Wales ) for two years .

Linfield's dominance decreased noticeably after 1990, but the Blues remained the leading team in Northern Ireland. In the 2006/07 season, Linfield managed to become the first team in more than 80 years to defend the championship and cup double .

European Cup balance sheet

As dominant as Linfield may be in Northern Ireland, the club can hardly keep up on a European level. Once they made it into a European quarter-finals - in the European Cup of National Champions in 1966/67  - but mostly the club was eliminated from the respective competition in the first round or qualifying rounds.
