FC Aris Bonneweg

The FC Aris Bonneweg ( French : Aris Bonnevoie ) was a football club from the southern suburb of Bonneweg in the capital of Luxembourg , which existed from 1922 to 2001 and was three times Luxembourg football champions .

The club was founded in 1922 as FC Aris Bonnevoie. In 1940 it was renamed FK Aris Bonneweg under German occupation and dissolved the following year. In 1944 it was re-established under the old name.

Bonneweg made his first experiences in the UEFA cup competitions in 1962/63 and 1963/64 in the qualifying matches for the trade fair cup .

In 1964 Bonneweg won the Luxembourg championship for the first time and took part in the European Champions Cup the following season . However, Aris was eliminated in qualifying against Benfica Lisbon . In 1966 Aris was champion again, but did not get past the first round in the European Cup against FC Linfield .

The Bonnewegers also made it to the Luxembourg Cup final six times, but only won the Coupe de Luxembourg in 1967 . In the European Cup Winners' Cup they lost to Olympique Lyonnais in the preliminary round .

1971/72 Aris played for the first time in the UEFA Cup competition and was eliminated by ADO Den Haag . However, they were again Luxembourg champions this season, so that they played again in the national championship competition in 1972/73 ; the preliminary round came this time against Argeş Piteşti .

As a cup finalist, they took part in the European Cup Winners' Cup two more times; In 1976/77 they were eliminated against the Carrick Rangers from Northern Ireland again in the first round, but were able to record their first victory in the 2-1 in Luxembourg. In the 1979/80 European Cup Winners' Cup , Aris celebrated his greatest success on international turf: Bonneweg reached the round of 16 with two 1-0 victories against Reipas Lahti . Here, however, the cup defender FC Barcelona was a size too big. After all, Bonneweg's Wolfgang Tullius scored a consolation goal at Camp Nou to make it 1: 7 (after the 1: 4 in the first leg, Jacques Mathes scored ). One more time, in the 1983/84 UEFA Cup , Aris stepped onto the international stage, but was eliminated without a hitch against FK Austria Wien .

By 2001 Aris Bonneweg had 42 seasons in the highest league in Luxembourg ; on March 14, 2001, Aris merged with CS Hollerich to form CS Alliance 01 Luxembourg .

Only a few years later, in 2005, this newly created club merged again with Union Luxemburg and Spora Luxemburg , two other traditional clubs in the Grand Duchy, to form Racing FC Union Luxemburg .
