The BGL Ligue is Luxembourg's top division in men's football .

history

From the first playout 1909-1912 the top flight was called Class A . In 1913 it was renamed the First Division . It carried this name until 1932. From 1932 to 1957 it was called the Ehrendivision , until it was renamed the National Division. It has had this title since the 2007/08 season, named after its main sponsor, BGL , Banque Générale du Luxembourg . In some media the terms top division and national division are used.

During the German occupation of Luxembourg from 1940 to 1944, gaming operations were suspended. The Luxembourg clubs were integrated into the Gauliga Moselland Group West and its subordinate divisions by the Football Department .

From 1946 twelve teams played in the top league. For the 1988/89 season the number of participants was reduced to ten and increased again to twelve in 1994 . The BGL Ligue has been playing with fourteen teams since the 2006/07 season . In the league below, the honorary doctorate , 14 teams also play.

Game mode

The season consists of 26 game days, divided into two game phases. Each participating team plays two games (first and second round) against all other teams.

The teams that take 13th and 14th place must be relegated to the honorary doctorate. The team from twelfth place must play a game against the third-placed team from the honorary doctorate. The winner is promoted or remains in the national division.

In the past, a play-off round was also held to determine the master and the relegated team at the end of the regular season. However, this mode was dropped from the 2006/07 season.
