The CS Grevenmacher is a Luxembourg football club . The club from the city of Grevenmacher on the border with Germany became Luxembourg football champions for the first time in 2003. The CSG plays its home games at the Stade Op Flohr .

history

1908 to 1924: difficulties at the start

The association was founded between August 14 and October 16, 1908 under the name of Stade Mosellan . A year later, they joined the Fédération des Sociétés Luxembourgeoises des Sports Athlétiques (FSLSA), the then responsible association for football, athletics, swimming and cycling. However, the first existence was short-lived, as a year after joining the club, a mast for a cable car was erected on the club's square, a converted meadow, which made it impossible to host games. When this mast was removed shortly before the start of the First World War , the club was re-established under the name Club Sportif . But this time, too, the association only existed for a short time, as the meadow was converted into an army camp at the beginning of the World War.

The soccer game in Grevenmacher was not resumed until 1919. With a victory in the Coupe des 10 Cantons in 1922, the club recorded its first success before the game had to be stopped again in 1924. This time the playing field was narrowed by an industrial plant and thus unusable.

1930 to 1944: stays in lower leagues

In 1930 a new attempt was made on a new field in the "Pietert". The club started in the 3rd division (4th division) and qualified two years later for the 2nd division, which from 1932 represented the new fourth league level. As early as 1936, you had to go back to the 3rd division (now 5th division). The stay in the lowest league was short-lived. In 1938, the club rose again sovereignly with eleven wins and one draw from twelve season games. And in the following season you also played a role in the 2nd division in the promotion race. In the end you were one point better than Daring Echternach on rank 2 and rose to promotion (3rd division). With only seven points from 18 games, relegation took place at the end of the 1939/40 season.

During the war years 1940 to 1944, activities at the CSG almost completely came to a standstill. During the occupation by the Wehrmacht, the club was forcibly renamed FK Grevenmacher .

1945 to 1993: "Elevator team" and lost cup finals

After the end of the war, the club started in the season 1945/46 under its old name CS Grevenmacher in the 4th division and began a rapid ascent. Although only fourth place was occupied at the end of the season, they rose because of increases in the higher leagues. In the next season they were, although unexpectedly promoted, extremely successful in the third division. A 4-2 win over Young Boys Diekirch made it clear that they were promoted to the 1st division (2nd division).

After a season in relegation battle, they finished 3rd in the 2nd division in the 1948/49 season, which entitled them to be promoted to the honorary division (now the national division ) for the first time . Within just four years they were promoted from the fourth division to the first division. The stay in the highest Luxembourg league was initially short-lived, with 9 points (3 wins, 3 draws) from 22 games, CS Grevenmacher was relegated to the first division as bottom of the table. In the 1950/51 season, the club made it into the finals of the Coupe de Luxembourg for the first time . There they lost to the first division club SC Tétange after a 1: 1 in the first meeting with 0: 2 in the replay.

The 1952/53 season was again quite successful for the East Luxembourgers. In the league they took first place and thus rose to the honor division for the second time since 1949, and in the cup they also reached the final for the second time. This time the Red Boys were beaten 2-1 by Differdange . On the way to the final, the first division clubs CS Fola Esch , Red Star Merl and Stade Dudelange were eliminated one after the other . In the following season they held their fourth place in the top division and in the cup the next final participation followed, but also in the third attempt they failed (0: 5 against Jeunesse Esch ). The departure from the top division was short-lived for CSG in the 1954/55 season. In the first division, a record was set in the following season: With 22 wins from 22 games and a goal difference of 111: 9, they rose again as a superior champion.

In 1959 Club Sportif reached the cup final for the fourth time in eight years, but this time too it was not enough to achieve great success. With 1: 3 after extra time they lost to Union Luxemburg . It should have been the last final of the CSG until 1995. In the next season, the best season results were achieved when the league finished in 3rd place. After six seasons in the top division, which has now been renamed the National Division, the club rose again to the 2nd division in 1961/62. It wasn't until 1968 that they returned to the House of Lords, but missed relegation by the tiny amount of one goal in the goal difference. The following two seasons were also part of the CSG scheme. The direct ascent in the 1969/70 season was followed by the next descent from the top class one season later. It was not until 1977 that the ascent was achieved. The stay in the first division lasted this time until 1984, before a one-year break with a stay in the second division occurred. The recent promotion was now the fifth and since then the last in the top division.

With the 1988/89 season CS Grevenmacher began to establish itself in the first division. For the first time they qualified for the championship play-off round created a year earlier, which took place at the end of the season. Although they finished last (6th), they should never be placed worse for the next few years. The presidency of Theysen Jos in 1992, who also sponsored the club, made it possible for CS Grevenmacher to play for the top league positions for the first time in the club's history.

1994 to 2016: Eternal runner-up, four cup titles, first championship and relegation

The 1993/94 season started an unbelievable series for the club in the national division. In nine seasons, the club was runner-up seven times. Reaching second place in the league for the first time gave Grevenmacher her first appearance in an international competition. They lost 2-1 and 6-0 in the UEFA Cup to Norwegian representative Rosenborg Trondheim , but for the next few years they were a constant participant in international competitions. In the 1994/95 season you should finally win your first national title. In the fifth cup finals they defeated Jeunesse Esch 3-2 in the replay after the first game had ended 1-1. In the league, Esch was left behind in the championship fight. By winning the final, the following season was also the first to participate in the now-abolished European Cup Winners' Cup . Grevenmacher won the home game against the Icelandic representative KR Reykjavík 3-2, in the second leg they lost 2-0 and were eliminated in the first round. This season you should be runner-up in Luxembourg for the third time in a row. At the end of the season, one point was missing from master Jeunesse Esch, who relegated CS Grevenmacher to second place a year later. In the UEFA Cup, they lost to Dinamo Tbilisi in the 1996/97 season (0-4 and 2-2).

After four second places in a row, they only finished third in the 1997/98 season, far behind master Jeunesse Esch and runner-up Union Luxemburg . In the UEFA Cup this time there was nothing to gain against Hajduk Split (1: 6), but the Coupe de Luxembourg won for the second time since 1995 . With a 2-0 final win over Avenir Beggen , they qualified again for the Cup Winners' Cup. With 2: 6 and 0: 2 they went down against Rapid Bucharest and they also had no success in the league in the 1998/99 season. In the end, they only finished fifth and even missed qualification for a European competition for the first time in five years.

In the 1999/2000 season, the club was runner-up for the fifth time since 1994. After being tied with F91 Dudelange in first place after the round two, they finished second at the end of the play-off round by eleven points. A year later it was again F91, who were left behind in the championship, while in the UEFA Cup they were eliminated by the Finnish club HJK Helsinki (1: 4 and 2: 0). The 2001/02 season should be similar to the previous season. For the third time in a row they were runner-up behind F91, but they were still first after the regular season and only lost their place to the South Luxembourgers in the play-offs. In the UEFA Cup they failed once again in the first round. This time AEK Athens was at least one class better (0: 6 and 0: 2).

The 2002/03 season should finally bring the Grevenmachern the longed-for league title. After seven runners-up titles, this time F91 Dudelange was distanced in the play-off games and thus won the first championship title in the club's history. In addition, they won the cup for the third time in eight years with a 1-0 victory over FC Etzella Ettelbrück and won the national double . Internationally, they were eliminated again in round 1 of the season. Opponents this time were the Cypriot club Anorthosis Famagusta (0: 3 and 2: 0).

A year later, CS Grevenmacher was allowed to participate in qualifying for the UEFA Champions League for the first time . Against the Herzegovinian team Leotar Trebinje they played 0-0 at home and 0-2 away. This also ended this adventure after just one lap. In the league, CS Grevenmacher had to leave the top positions to other clubs after winning the championship in 2003. In 2008 they secured the cup title for the fourth time with a 4-1 win over Victoria Rosport .

From 1998 to 2013, Daniel Huss, one of the most accurate players in Luxembourg, played for the club. In 364 first division games, the striker scored 228 times for Grevenmacher.

As a knocked-down bottom of the table with only 13 points, the club rose to the honorary doctorate after 31 years of first class at the end of the 2015/16 season .

2016 to today: relegation battle and fall into the third division

The free fall initially continued in the 2016/17 season . CS finished the season in 11th place and secured relegation only with a 2-0 in the barrage game against FC Minerva Lintgen .

After the 1: 6 home defeat against UN Käerjéng 97 in the opening game of the 2017/18 season , coach Manuel Peixoto announced his resignation on August 21, 2017. On the last day of the match, another 1: 6 defeat against Käerjéng sealed the relegation to the third-class 1st division . There they just missed the promotion ranks in 2018/19 with 3rd place and a year later they were in 4th place when the season was canceled due to the corona pandemic. The team has been coached by former national player Mikhail Zaritski since summer 2020 .
