history
Foundation phase
The association was founded on January 30, 1911 in Famagusta. After northern Cyprus was occupied by Turkey in 1974 , Anorthosis moved its club headquarters to Larnaka.
The team has won 13 championship titles and ten cup wins in its history. A significant success for the club and also for Cypriot football history came in 2005 when they defeated the Turkish representative Trabzonspor 3-1 in the second round of qualifying for the Champions League . Since the second leg was lost with 0: 1 and thus only with one goal difference, the third round was reached. There, however, the club failed with two defeats at Glasgow Rangers .
2008/09 season
In the 2008/09 season Famagusta was able to advance into the group stage of the Champions League under Georgian coach Temur Kezbaia . After the Armenian club FC Pjunik Yerevan had been eliminated at the beginning , there was a clash with the Austrian champions SK Rapid Wien in the second qualifying round . In the first leg on July 30, 2008, the Cypriots caused a surprise with a clear 3-0 win over Rapid. Despite a 1: 3 defeat in the second leg a week later in Vienna, Famagusta prevailed with an overall result of 4: 3 and reached the next round. Famagusta won the first leg of the third qualifying round against Olympiacos from Greece 3-0 in front of a home crowd. The club lost the second leg 0-1 and reached the main round of the Champions League with an overall result of 3-1, which was the greatest success in the club's history to date.
There the club was drawn into Group B with Inter Milan , Werder Bremen and Panathinaikos Athens . The first game of the group stage against Werder Bremen ended goalless 0-0, the second game - Famagusta's home premiere in the Champions League - was won 3-1 against Panathinaikos, followed by a 0-1 at Inter Milan. Famagusta managed a surprise on Matchday 4 when they caught up twice at home against Inter Milan and even led 3-2 in the meantime. The game ended 3: 3. On the fifth matchday, Anorthosis sealed Werder Bremen's elimination from the Champions League with a 2-2 draw, and in the meantime led 2-0 in this encounter. On the last day of the match, Famagusta lost in Athens while Werder won. Thus Anorthosis Famagusta was eliminated as fourth in the group.
