Temur Kezbaia ( Georgian თემურ ქეცბაია ; born March 18, 1968 in Gali , Abkhazia , Georgian SSR ) is a Georgian football coach and former football player .

The former midfielder is currently the coach of the Georgian national soccer team . Previously, he coached the Greek top club Olympiacos Piraeus and the Cypriot club Anorthosis Famagusta , for which he was also active as a player until he retired from active football since 2002. As an active footballer, he played in the first leagues of England , Scotland and Greece around the turn of the millennium and was a key player in the national team in his homeland .

Kezbaia began his career at Dinamo Suchum before moving to Dinamo Tiflis in 1987 , for which he made his first appearance in the USSR's top division that same year . After Georgia left the Soviet league system, he was three times champion of the Umaghlessi League and Georgian national player with the club , which enabled him to move to "West" European countries. His first stop was Anorthosis Famagusta in Cyprus in 1992 , before he switched to the reigning Greek champions AEK Athens in 1994 , with whom he won the national cup in 1996 and 1997 .

With the Bosman ruling he was able to move to the reigning English runner-up Newcastle United after the 1997 season ; with Newcastle he was twice (1998, 1999) unsuccessfully in the FA Cup final . After 78 appearances and seven goals in the Premier League, he left Newcastle in the summer of 2000 to play for the then English second division Wolverhampton Wanderers , which he left after 24 games at the end of the 2000/01 season. His new club was Dundee FC, for which he played 22 times in one year. After the 2002 season, Kezbaia let his career end with his old club Anorthosis Famagusta, until 2004 he was not only a player but also assistant coach and since 2004 player-coach of the club. In his first season as head coach in 2004/05, the club immediately won the championship. In the following qualification for the UEFA Champions League you could eliminate Trabzonspor .

In the summer of 2007 he finally resigned from active football and has only been the coach of the Cypriot club since then. In the following season he was able to celebrate the second championship title as a coach. The resulting legitimate participation in the Champions League led to the greatest success of a Cypriot club in European Cup history. Not only did he reach the group stage with Anorthosis over 3 qualifying rounds, there the team even fought for 6 points (1 win and 3 draws) and only gambled away the qualification in the last game.

In the summer of 2009, Kezbaia signed a three-year contract with the Greek series champion Olympiacos Piraeus . However, on September 15, 2009, Kezbaia was released. According to the club, it was an amicable termination of the contract due to the dissatisfaction of the fans with the current style of play and disagreements between the players and the coach. Just a month later, in November 2009, Kezbaia took over the coaching position of a national soccer team for the first time, namely that of his home country Georgia .

Kezbaia played 45 times for Georgia between 1990 and 2003 and scored 15 goals.
