David Kipiani ( Georgian დავით ყიფიანი ; Russian Давид Давидович Кипиани / David Davidovich Kipiani , known under the English transliteration David Kipiani ; * 18th November 1951 in Tbilisi , Georgian SSR ; † 17th September 2001 at Zerowani , Georgia ) was a Georgian - Soviet Soccer player and coach . The midfielder is considered to be one of the best Georgian school players in Soviet football and was one of the key Dinamo Tbilisi players in winning the 1981 European Cup Winners' Cup . He scored 100 competitive goals for Tbilisi and seven goals in 19 appearances for the Soviet national team .

Despite his success, Qipiani, who was voted Soviet Footballer of the Year in 1977, remained relatively unknown internationally, as he was not used in any major international tournament. As a coach, Qipiani was also very successful, with various Georgian clubs he won seven national championships, and he was twice coach of the Georgian national team .

Active career

Qipiani was trained at the football school No. 35 in Tbilisi, and began his professional career at Dinamo in 1968. At the beginning he was unable to assert himself and in 1970 switched to local rivals Lokomotiv Tbilisi for a year . There he could show more of his talent. The following season he moved back to Dinamo, where he became the linchpin of the club's most successful team for the next ten years. In the years 1971 to 1981 Dinamo was able to place seven times under his leadership in the top three of the Soviet league and even win the championship title (1978) and two cup wins.

In addition, Qipian played successfully in the Soviet selection. With her he won the bronze medal at the Olympic football tournament in 1976 , but without being used at the tournament even once. In Qipian's heyday, the USSR was unable to qualify for either world or European championships.

Coaching career

Qipiani was after the end of his active time coach, mostly in Georgia, he coached only two foreign clubs; Olympiakos Nicosia (Cyprus 1992/93) and Schinnik Yaroslavl (Russia 1998). Most of the time, however, he stayed with his old club Dinamo Tbilisi, where he was employed as head coach from 1984 to 1985, 1988, 1990 and 1995 to 1997 and as a manager in 1991. In between, he briefly coached Tbilisi local rival Lok in 1988. In 1997 he was also the first coach of the Georgian national team , but was dismissed after failing to qualify for the 1998 World Cup .

From 1999 until his death he was finally the coach of Torpedo Kutaisi , which he was able to lead to two championships (2000 and 2001) and a cup victory (2001). From 2000 to 2001 he was national coach for the second time, but was dismissed because he missed qualifying for the 2002 World Cup .

Qipiani suffered a heart attack on September 17, 2001 while driving his car on a street near the village of Zerowani , near the city of Mtskheta , and died of the heart attack related to injuries from the car accident. Because of his funeral the following weekend, the Georgian Federation canceled all games that weekend. A week later, the association named the Georgian soccer cup after Kipiani.
