The FC Torpedo Kutaisi ( Georgian ტორპედო ქუთაისი ) is a football club from Kutaisi , the second largest city in Georgia . The club plays in the Ramas Schengelia Stadium , which holds around 12,000 spectators. After Dinamo Tbilisi , Torpedo Kutaisi is the second most successful club in Georgia.

history

The club was founded in 1946 as Dinamo Kutaisi, in the meantime it was called Lokomotive Kutaisi , and in 1959 the club name Torpedo Kutaisi was established. In 1962 they made it to the highest Soviet league for the first time , but could not establish themselves there in the long term, but were to a certain extent an " elevator team ". In addition to Dinamo Tbilisi , they were the only Georgian team that spent more than two seasons in the highest Soviet league (a total of 13 seasons).

Since Torpedo was never able to establish itself as the top Soviet team, many promising talents were often lost after a short time to league rivals, especially local rivals Dinamo Tbilisi. Ramas Schengelia , Sergei Kutiwadze and Tengis Sulakwelidze were among the most famous former torpedo players who later successfully ran for Dinamo Tbilisi . A historical rivalry developed between the two clubs from Tbilisi and Kutaisi, and the game between Torpedo and Dinamo is still the most explosive derby in Georgian football today.

In 1984 Kutaisi made it to the highest Soviet league for the last time, but had to accept relegation again in the 1986 season.

In 1990 Georgia declared itself independent and Torpedo Kutaisi played from then on in the newly founded Georgian Umaghlessi League , the highest league in independent Georgia. In 2000, 2001 and 2002 they won the Georgian championship title, making it the second most successful Georgian team after Dinamo Tbilisi.
