Fotbal Club Sheriff Tiraspol ( Russian Шериф Тирасполь , also known under the name “Șerif Tiraspol”) is a football club from Tiraspol . He plays in the Divizia Națională , the highest football league in Moldova , and is their current record champions.

history

The association was founded in 1996 under the name Tiras Tiraspol . The game was started in Divizia B , the third highest division in the country. Immediately the promotion to the second-rate Divizia A succeeded and the club started the season under the new name Sheriff Tiraspol . With 21 points ahead of Energhetic Dubasari , who occupied the relegation place, the team from Tiraspol was second division champions and managed to march through to the Moldovan football club , the Divizia Națională .

In the first division, Sheriff Tiraspol reached fourth place in his first season in 1998/99 and won his first title with a 2-1 win after overtime against Constructorul Chișinău with the Cup. A year later, the club was runner-up behind Zimbru Chișinău, one point behind . 2001 to 2010 the club was then ten times in a row Moldovan national champions. In addition, with victories against Nistru Otaci in 2001 and 2002 each won the cup . 2004 Sheriff was again in the cup final, but had to admit defeat Zimbru Chișinău 1: 2. Again against Nistru Otaci in 2006 they won the Moldovan Cup four times with a 2-0 win. This was finally won in 2008, 2009 and 2010.

In the first qualifying round for the 2008/09 UEFA Champions League , the Kazakh champions FK Aqtöbe were defeated 0-1 and 4-0. Then the team was eliminated against Sparta Prague .

In the 2009/10 season, the team advanced to the play-offs of the UEFA Champions League . There Sheriff Tiraspol failed at the Greek club Olympiacos Piraeus (0: 2 and 0: 1). As a result, the first participation in the group stage of the Champions League was missed, but the first qualification for the group stage of the newly created UEFA Europa League succeeded . Sheriff is the first Moldovan club to make it into the group stage of a UEFA competition. After a win against FC Twente Enschede and two draws against Steaua Bucharest, third place in the group was achieved, as a result of which FC Sheriff Tiraspol had to be eliminated from the further competition. Nevertheless, this performance represents the greatest success so far at the international level of the club and also of a Moldovan club in general. In the 2010/11 season, the FC Sheriff qualified again for the Europa League by winning the Croatian champions Dinamo Zagreb in the Champions League Eliminated qualification, but then lost out in the playoffs against FC Basel .
