UEFA Champions League 2009/10
The Volksparkstadion

The 2009/10 UEFA Europa League was the 39th edition of the second most important competition for European football clubs , which was held under the name UEFA Cup until the 2008/09 season. 192 clubs from all 53 national associations of UEFA took part in the competition this season.

The season began with the first leg of the first qualifying round on July 2, 2009 and ended with the final on May 12, 2010 in the Volksparkstadion , which Atlético Madrid won 2-1 aet against Fulham FC .

The top scorer of the competition was jointly the Paraguayan Óscar Cardozo from Benfica Lisbon and the Peruvian Claudio Pizarro from Werder Bremen with nine goals each.

With this win, Atlético Madrid qualified for the 2010 UEFA Super Cup .

mode

All clubs that had occupied one of the UEFA Cup places regulated by the UEFA five-year ranking at the end of last season were eligible to participate . In the draws for the qualifying rounds, the teams were divided equally into seeded (stronger) and unset (weaker) teams according to their club coefficients and drawn among themselves. In addition, no two teams from the same nation were drawn to each other in the qualifying rounds. The previously common division of teams into the three regional zones North, Middle / East and South, which was supposed to reduce the travel costs of the qualifiers, has been abolished. The fourth and final qualifying round was called the "play-off" for better marketing. Qualification via the UEFA Intertoto Cup was canceled because this competition was discontinued in 2008. The fifteen losers in the third qualifying round of the UEFA Champions League qualified for the play-offs and the ten losers in the Champions League play-offs for the group stage. As with the UEFA Cup, in the modified competition the eight thirds in the group stage of the UEFA Champions League joined the field in the round of 32.
