Clinton "Clint" Drew Dempsey (born March 9, 1983 in Nacogdoches ) is a former American football player who was most recently under contract with the Seattle Sounders . The winger , who can also be used as a striker , was at times captain of the US national team . Together with Landon Donovan, he is the national team's record scorer with 57 goals each.

Athletic career

Youth (until 2004)

Clint Dempsey, son of Aubrey and Debbie Dempsey, has two siblings with Ryan and Crystal and another oldest sister, Jennifer, who died of a brain aneurysm at the age of 16 . Clint was ten years old at the time. While Jennifer was considered one of the best tennis players in her age group, the Dempseys did not have the means to support Clint or Ryan and take them to the training facilities in Dallas, which were three hours away by car . After Jennifer died, Ryan auditioned for the Dallas Texans , but it was Clint who caught his eye as he passed the time juggling the ball.

Dempsey joined the club, was later named team captain and was awarded as an MVP at the Tampa Bay Sun Bowl junior championship . In addition to active sports, Clint and Ryan were especially enthusiastic about the Argentine national team , especially Diego Maradona . They had tickets for the Argentine game against Bulgaria at the 1994 US World Cup , but were both disappointed when Maradona was disqualified from the remainder of the tournament for a doping offense. Dempsey later attended Furman University and was a key player for the local " Paladins ". During his three seasons he made 61 of 62 games and scored 17 goals.

New England Revolution (2004-2007)

In the Major League Soccer draft , Dempsey was signed ninth by New England Revolution . As an attacking central midfielder, he scored seven goals in his first season as a pro and was awarded the title of MLS Rookie of the Year as the best debutant despite missing several games due to a broken jaw . In the play-off games he was one of the top performers on his team. In the penalty shootout against DC United , he missed the decisive penalty; thus New England Revolution missed the championship final, the MLS Cup . In 2005 Dempsey was able to record ten goals and nine assists . He scored five winning goals and was third in the MLS in this category. Dempsey then scored the decisive goal in a selection game of the MLS against English club Fulham . He scored another important goal against Chicago Fire and led his franchise into the MLS Cup of 2005. In the end, the MLS selected Dempsey into the team of the best eleven players of the season ("MLS Best XI").

Dempsey made a name for himself in addition to his playful skills through fighting and operational strength. In 2005 - before the team doctor's diagnosis - he completed two games with a broken jaw and after his return he defied his sprained ankle. He often exposed himself to potentially dangerous game situations and scored a few goals with a diving header . Because of his speed, he was one of the most fouled players in the MLS in 2005 . In March 2006, he was banned for two weeks in a training game after a fight with teammate Joe Franchino .

Fulham FC (2007-2012)

At the beginning of 2007 he took the next step in his career. After having trained at Feyenoord Rotterdam and Everton for the past two years , Major League Soccer finally gave him permission to move in January. For around four million US dollars - the highest transfer income in the history of MLS to date - he moved from New England Revolution to Fulham FC . There he made his debut on January 20, 2007 by substitution against Tottenham Hotspur , but came in the remaining games of the 2006/07 season under the then coach Chris Coleman on the role of supplementary player. This changed in the following season 2007/08 under Lawrie Sanchez and from December 2007 under Roy Hodgson . He conquered a regular place, scored the most goals in his team with six Premier League goals and extended the contract to 2010 in May 2008. Dempsey, who was now used in London either on the offensive outside positions and as a central striker, qualified with Fulham at the end of the 2008/09 season for the Europa League and signed a new four-year contract in August 2009. In the Europa League season 2009/10 Dempsey completed 13 games, although due to tactical guidelines he only played seven of them from the start; Coach Hodgson often relied on a reinforced defense and Bobby Zamora as the only center forward. For Zamora Dempsey came on May 12, 2010 from the 55th minute as the first US American in a Europa League final to use.

He also had a regular place in the team in the 2010/11 season . On March 19, 2011, he scored his tenth goal of the season, becoming the best American goalscorer in the Premier League; the previous record holder Brian McBride had only scored nine goals in one season. At the end of the season Dempsey was voted Fulham Player of the Year by fans .

Tottenham Hotspur (2012-2013)

On August 31, 2012, Dempsey moved to Tottenham Hotspur within London . For Tottenham he played in 29 league games and scored seven goals.

Return to the MLS (since 2013)

In August 2013 Dempsey left Europe after six years and went back to the USA to play in Major League Soccer again. There he plays for the Seattle Sounders . He made his debut on August 10, 2013 against FC Toronto .

Dempsey was banned from the US Open Cup for two years on June 26, 2015 , after tearing up "the referee's note" in anger nine days earlier in the game against the Portland Timbers in that competition . After playing over 100 games for Seattle, Dempsey ended his active career in August 2018 after injuries had set him back over and over again in the months before.

Return to Fulham FC on loan (2014)

In January 2014 Dempsey returned to Fulham on loan for two months during the MLS hiatus. There he stood on January 4, 2014 for the first time in a cup game against Norwich City . After Fulham showed no interest in a renewed commitment, Dempsey returned to the Sounders.

American national soccer team

Dempsey played in the United Arab Emirates during the 2003 Junior World Cup . He made his debut for the US senior team on November 17, 2004 against Jamaica . He was in the US squad for the 2006 World Cup in Germany and scored the only goal of his team in the tournament in the 1: 2 defeat against Ghana .

Dempsey quickly developed into a leading player in the US selection and - as with his English club in Fulham - was called up as a striker due to his scoring risk. In 2006 he won the election for the best player in the national team with the award for “Honda Player of the Year”. A year later he was voted American Footballer of the Year . Also in 2007, like two years before, he won the CONCACAF Gold Cup . With his participation in the final against Brazil he experienced a sporting climax at the Confederations Cup in 2009 , after he contributed to the 2-0 win against European champions Spain in the semifinals with a performance that helped him to the “Man of the Match” . With five goals in twelve games in qualifying for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa , he was second best goalscorer behind Jozy Altidore and together with Landon Donovan .

On September 6, 2013 he completed his 100th international match in the 1: 3 in the World Cup qualifier against Costa Rica , where he scored the 1: 2 with a penalty. On June 16, 2014, he scored the fastest goal of the US national team in 32 seconds in the first group game of the World Cup against Ghana. The game was won 2-1. In the same game, he broke his nose after a duel with John Boye , but played the game to the end.

On July 22, 2017, he set Landon Donovan's record in the Gold Cup semi-final against Costa Rica with his 57th international goal .
