Footballer of the Year in the United States

The US Soccer Athlete of the Year title is awarded annually in the USA by the United States Soccer Federation . This award is sponsored by the automobile manufacturer Chevrolet . This award has been given to a male soccer player since 1984, and to a female one since 1985. The most successful player is Abby Wambach with six awards, followed by Mia Hamm (five awards) and Landon Donovan with four awards for men .

The American football journalists have also been honoring the Honda Player of the Year every year since 1991 . This award goes to a player on the US national team. The winner of the award receives a Honda automobile. The latter is the award better known in Germany, so the winner is generally referred to as America's Footballer of the Year. Landon Donovan has received this title seven times. On the occasion of the 10th anniversary in 2000, the best player of the decade was honored. The winner in this category was Eric Wynalda .

Honors in the North American Soccer League 1968 - 1984

There was no formal "Footballer of the Year" in the North American Soccer League . Every year, however, the most valuable player of the season ("Most Valuable Player" - MVP), the best newcomer ("Rookie") and the best coach were honored.
